2000 E55 Speakers Make Loud Noise When Turning On Ignition

Hi Everyone -

I just acquired a 2000 E55. So now begins the process of addressing all the little gremlins. Here is the first:

After the car has sat for a while, the speakers will make a loud noise for a split second when the ignition is turned on. The loudness level is close to max volume. Its not a "pop" sound like speakers can make sometimes, nor is it a static sound; it's just random tone.

The car is equipped with Navi.

I did a little research on this issue for the W210 and I'm not coming up with much, therefore this may be an isolated issue. Any guidance or links will be appreciated.

1 sec, medium frequency, possible DTMF in tone and always the same sound? if so, that
is the old school emergency/SOS communication system which your car used to have. it
was based on the old, analog technology which has since been discontinued. MB has
transitioned to digital but to retrofit yours would cost thousands. cheaper to call AAA using
your cell phone.

your next question might be 'how do i turn this off?' your choice would be to access the
A pillar and disconnect the speaker (not used for your sound system anyway), or to have
the dealer or independant disconnect using MB SDS computer system. if you're lucky a
forum member may live near you who has one (unlikely) or has purchased an asian
clone system.

i've not done this using the clone system I have so unsure 100% if this disconnect is
indeed SDS menu driven. perhaps someone else reading has more precise knowledge

another option, locate and pull fuse

popping sound from speakers

2001 E430. I'm not sure my "sound" is the same as Alexio's. My popping sound is LOUD and cracking like an electrical short, lasts a second or less, is random and happens maybe every twentieth or so time I turn the radio on, and afterwards the sound is completely normal. Does that sound like the problem is in the radio, amp, or what?
James
P.S. My receiver is almost always set to play a CD, like about 99.99999% of the time.

The volume control knob on my radio acts weird. You touch it and never know if it's going up or down. Sometimes it will go from normal to full blast just by touching it.

speakers

Almost all older MB receiver knobs I know of do that---very common problem. You just have to "hunt" until you get the volume you want.

A gaggle of MB's
Okay...okay...

1) Eliminate TeleAid startup noise - Don't go in and dig out the old teleaid/phone gear - which can cause a malfunction message on the cluster - all you need to do - for free - is disconnect each upper dash speaker - which are not used for the radio/stereo - and leave the teleaid/phone electronics alone.

There is a connector plug behind each speaker that you can disconnect. The link below deals with replacing the upper dash speakers and/or replacing broken speaker covers - however it gives you clear instructions on how to get each grill off - and how you can disconnect each speaker - and reinstall the original grill.

2) Hunting-Volume-Control - for those having problems with their "hunting" volume control - buy a $9 can of MAF cleaner at any auto parts store (which is a non-ammonia/non-residue contact cleaner).
Pull the volume knob off. pull the plate behind the know that covers the volume control from the bottom. (did it with my fingernail. came right off).
Place a paper towel or cloth under the exposed volume control. Use the spray tube that came with the MAF cleaner to spray as best you can between the volume shaft and the body - while working the volume control shaft back-n-forth. Wait for the MAF cleaner to dry - then works it again another 1/2 times.
Reinstall plate - reinstall knob - and you should be good-to-go - or at least much better.

Keep the beat !

great! thanks for the insight, fabbrisd1. out of curiousity, do you know if that wake up Teleaid/sound can be disabled via SDS menu?

I am hard pressed to ask one of my tech's to check - from my side I expect there will be a option on full/genuine Star to deactivate that system - but nowadays having a tech go way back to W210 takes a bit of finesse or a big ticket service bill.

Keep the beat !

okay, f, thanks for your reply. i'll see what i can do. I'll need to find a neighbor
with teleaid which is still deaf-toning the owner and experiment some more.

All -

thanks for the information. I disconnected the corner dash speakers and the sound is now gone. From the research I did, I agree that it's not worth the hassle to remove the whole SOS system from the car, much easier to disconnect the speakers - too me all of 10 minutes.
