2001 E320, AC voltage appears to drop - AC blows like its set to auto

The AC blows cold, but doesn't blow consistently. It will go from barely blowing, to full force, and in between, all on its own. There's no correlation to being at a stop or accelerating, it appears to act on its own at random times.

When I set the AC to auto, it actually worked more consistently in accordance to where I had it set fan speed wise.

Anyone have ideas? Is this common?

I hope it's not the regulator

Common situation is diverting the air flow from dashboard vents to defrost, what makes you feel like changing the blower speed.
That happens when you have vacuum leak and correlates to open throttle.
Check that before dropping parts in.

Sounds like your fan system is responding correctly to different cabin environments---fan runs faster when cabin temps hot and slows down as cabin temps that you preset are met---enjoy and watch out for the less learned spammers at Ben's Wurld!!

A gaggle of MB's
If your fan speed is not consistent - then sounds like a duck - quacks like a duck - you might consider the blower "regulator" - if it has not been "updated" and is original regulaotr - the W140 regulator works fine for splice in and use with thermal paste between regulator and baseplate..
