Key remote control system not working
Hi guys. I recently fixed the key ignition problem of my 1996 E320 sedan with the advice of a forum member who told me to see a dealer after the key failed to turn in the ignition. The dealer said the key was ok but the ignition cylinder needed service which he fixed successfully in less than two hours. Three months down the line the remote sensors (red and green lights) on the inside rear view mirror are not responding when I press the key pointing to them. Before this problem the sensor lights could blink simultaneously when I opened the driver's door and continued to do so for about a minute then went off. And then they would respond or choose not to respond when I pointed the key towards them. Now the remote control system is completely gone. Pliz help me - Stewart.

The door remote is separate from key part in the same body, so calling it a key is a bit misleading.
From what I remember your car has 3 receivers: in center mirror, in driver door and trunk lid.
Did you try them all?
Is central locking switch on the dash working?

I believe the 96 only had the sensor in the mirror. I think in 97 they started putting sensors in the trunk lid as well as the driver side door handle.
I ran into this problem a couple years ago...i just ended up installing a viper alarm with pager. It can arm/disarm and open trunk from super far away and can even be controlled/monitored by your smart phone. I figured this would be a cheaper way than try to figure out why the remote entry wasnt working.
The infrared system is neat but i used to literally have to be like 2 ft from my car for it to unlock or lock. Now i can do it from down the street.

Reading it again, the remote battery might need replacement.
Normal people don't need VIN for that.
