Sun roof reset?

1999 E320 wagon.

I have tried all the instructions that I can but no joy.....
I bought the car a couple of weeks ago and the sun roof hasn't been right.
If I tip up, it goes part way and stops, then will go up all the way on the second push. If I push down to close, nothing happens. If I move the switch to slide it back, it closes and slides back about 3" then stops. If I push back again it will slide all the way open. If I then push to slide it closed, it goes all the way forward then tilts up without stopping.
The biggest problem is getting to park at just the right closed spot so that it doesn't leak.
I suspect that it just needs to relearn?

Yes. Start the car, depress 3-5 seconds tilt up, then depress 3-5 seconds to close.

It is also possible the overhead control panel's sun roof switch is going bad. If so, you have to replace the entire panel as the switch is installed in such a way that you have to destroy the board to get the old switch out.

If it continues to malfunction after multiple "relearn" attempts, just replace the overhead panel.

You should carry a T-handle 4mm hex head wrench for emergency closure of the sun roof.

FWIW, here's the part number for mine:
208-820-70-01-7D05 $337 delivered.
The "7D05" refers to the color code grey. An "8G15" suffix is a green color.

Photo of the old versus the new. Took me 15 minutes to swap them out. Until I looked up the part number on the EPC, I never knew a previous owner had replaced the overhead with a used part of the wrong color....

7D05 on the left, 8G15 on the right.

A gaggle of MB's
Not uncommon to fail a partially-closed sunroof in the rain.

If it was me - for $40-$60 - I would consider ordering a "used part" from a eBay vendor that offers part/replacement warranty against DOA - and when I got the "new"/used part in I would spray the sh*t out of it from the back with MAF cleaner - air dry - and install that.
