Mercedes-Bens E430 4.2L V8
New Owner E430 V8 W210 Tune/Long-Term Care Help

Always been an Audi/Porsche owner (love my 944 1985 ) We recently acquired an uber clean 1998 E430 V8 4.3L with a black on black. As is runs very well and smooth, no hickups so far..idles wonderful but she does have 164,000 on her with no major tune history.

One of the first things I do when I buy a car is throw about 1K-1500K into a tune up for some preventive care and it has always paid off. No difference with the Mercedes. This morning she goes in for a oil change off that bat, detailing and having the headlights buffed.

Below is my outline from my research and experience for the Tune Up and some long term care for this car. is there anything I missed? Anything else you suggest? The lowest category I think i will hold off on the Aux water pump. Please share your input as this is all new to me with a Mercedes ..DANKE!

Pretty good list and congrats on your new car. I would say perhaps the water pump and O2 sensors are not required if those items are working properly however when I got my W210 2 years ago with 164K miles I went through a similar process to ensure everything was good, and the last 2 years have been relatively maintenance free after the initial push of that work - so good luck with it brother.

If the car is running fine cleaning the MAF should be enough.

I would check the valve cover gaskets and breather covers for leaks.

A gaggle of MB's
Whoa cowboy - you might want to reconsider your list

Tune-UP Outline Mercedes-Benz 1998 E430 4.3L V8 164,000

----------------------------------------------

FIRST KEY = proper transmission service - see stickies - and replace $14 transmission connector with genuine MB/MOPAR plug only. See more comments below:

2ND KEY ITEM - check belt tensioner - if old style replace with Contitech kit which has Litens/OE belt tensioner and Conti belt - could be less elsewhere than shown below

https://www.amazon.com/Continental-E...+tensioner+kit

------------------------------------------
1) Fuel Injector Service - not needed - after fuel filter replacement - use 1/2 $9 bottle of Stabil Marine Formula in tank - 2nd 1/2 2500 miles out

2) Oil Change Service (Full Syn.) - correct fleece filter - Mann $10 HU71

3) MAF Sensor - $110 - Amazon return if not correct Bosch box with holo sticker

https://www.amazon.com/Bosch-0280217...ir+flow+sensor

3) Brakes/rotor + disc replace based on wear - not age. Front/Rear Disc Brakes (Bosch Pads & Rotors) - check fitment - ATE/Zimmerman are actual OE rotors - Pagid are the OE pads - check fitment - $80 for Pagid OE front/rear pads total _ $120 front OE/Zimmerman rotors - $65 rear OE/ATE set

FILTERS: let's not screw the poach here

Cabin - that's up to you

Air Filters : Mann or Hengst only $12

Fuel: Mann or Bosch only $38 - plus 4 replacement clamps

Transmission : Mann filter/gasket set $15 + new washer $2 + if DIY dipstick $20-$30 + correct fluid + see stickies for drop/pan/fill or "pump/fill" procedure method. Transmission service is a CLINICAL PRECISE job and not a dirty rag job.

02 Sensors - my suggestion - replace ONLY if you have CEL - 02 sensors are "dumb" sensors - they work or don't work

Spark Plug Wires : My suggestion do NOT replace unless you get CEL - really man - OE wires hold correct resistance for another 10 yrs.

Spark Plugs - Man all 16 - correct plugs 7422 - $73

https://www.amazon.com/Piece-Bosch-S...ch+7422+16+pcs

Spark Plug "boot tool" $17

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mercedes-V6-...474477&vxp=mtr

PCV System - Not my thing unless you have leakage

Water Pump : Check if you have aux oil cooler - you need correct fitment pump. - if you are freaky about water pump that's fine - please understand Graf pump has alloy impeller - and Laso at $120 has stainless impeller - you see stainless propellers on good boats - you choose...

Thermostat - Walker is fine as long as correct fitment - check old thermostat for signs of corrosion - ONLY if corroded go to cooling system Citric flush - with VERY good hose water double flush after

Coolant : MB or Valvoline G05 only - if mixing concentrate use ONLY distilled water -

Auxiliary Water Pump : They work forever - or they don't work - it's a little stirring pump - don't be freaky

===================================

1) Check driver's door lock cylinder + trunk lock cylinder for key unlock - if forzen do not force/break key with excessive force - repeated use of PB Blaster with spray/tube in forzen cyclinder (or gun BreakFree) and repeated medium force key turn will free up cylinders over time

2) From owners manual - do battery disconnect (key OUT of ignition on disconnect/reconnect) and reset steering angle sensor - radio - and reset each window and sunroof switch. If you don't reset - that's how people end up with blown window regulators or sunroof problems

3) do foum search for ECU/tranny reset - quick 3 min thing - to restore your E430 to agressive factory defaults

4) Walmart auto service offers headlight polishing for like $35-$40 using 3M kit - for me - I let them do the work

5) Reverse the rubber gasket on your fuel filler cap

6) Spray clean engine to cleanoff old oil/dirt residue - so with clean engine over next 1000 miles you can really tell is valve cover gaskets are "seeping"/minor or "leaking" which you can later address. Dealer trick "seepage" picks up road dirt and looks "bad" when really just a minor/minor no sweat

7) Get a $20 OBD scanner for general codes

8) A 160K miles - check motor mounts - hydraulic filled mounts - replace with Lemfoerder or Sachs/Boge only

9) Check flex discs or flex joints for "serious" cracking or play - consider replacement

10) Suspension gets tired at 160K miles - unless major leaks shocks are fine - "seepage" at that mileage normal - you get into ball joints - for example - but in my experience a dealer is best for alignment

11) Check rear tires - if one or the other has serious uneven wear on the inside - in the history of the car a tow truck tends to "hook" the lower control arm rather than using tow hook - which for that rear tire whacked up the alignment for that wheel

12) Appreciate the right fresh rubber for your E430 - in general 16" wheels is "normal" E430 17" are Sport package lots of choices either way - for you one personal fav are the Yoko's...
--------------------------------

Not complete - but on your original list - save you good $$ by avoiding some unneccesary service - and trying to point you on some key parts where from forum experience best source correct/brand/quality replacement parts - let internet save you best dough on specific brand parts
