most

auto chain stores, shucks kraggens etc. sell little 8 piece torx bit sets for about 7 bucks that are the proper security bits with the little dimple in the middle,or use the pliers
you will need the bits eventually for some other job.

These auto parts store do not have the 5-pointed bits. I just bought mine from Kragens and they are 6-pointed with a dimple in the middle. Guess I'll just use a pliers & replace them with standard screws. Thanks guys!

Torx T20

is a patented 6 sided bit that is why I said go to the auto parts store the bits they sell with the dimple security are the ones you need.
Go out and look at the torx screw in the maf it is 6 sided.all the torx screws and bolts male and female are 6 pointed under the hood of the benz .
It's a T20 6pointed torx bit.

That is exactly what I bought from Kragens - a set of security torx bits (6-pointed) with dimples in the middle. But the torx screw on the MAF is 5-pointed, not 6-pointed. I'll just keep them for future use. I know there are a lot of torx screws in this car. Thanks.

30 MPG on a recent trip in my 99 E320

I drove from the Jersey Shore to Delaware and back and got 30 MPG. My cruise control was set at 65 MPH for most of the trip.

I know this post is only for E320. But I wanted to share my E430 4matic result. 27.6MPG on highway. Better than some of the E320 posted here.

Relatively new tires @ 32psig all around

Around town 18-19 mpg

100% highway (65-75 mph) 29 mpg

I fill up at the same station/same pump unless on the road and calculate the gas mileage on every tankful so those are averages over several tankfuls.
And I drive with a light foot.

I got 30.2 on a trip to the lake. The highways are curvy and hilly as they cut through various hills and mountains. I used to get around 25-27 on the same trip before the turbo . The turbo is pretty big for the engine so it doesnt boost at all when your not 21%+ throttle. It would probably give better mileage if it was a little smaller so it could swirl up the air a little better at cruising speeds.

E320
On a 79 Mile trip the other week I managed a whoping 50MPG this included Town, Country and Motorway driving. Avarage MPH came out at 44MPH but still this is a great result.

I do drive 40 miles to work each day and still manage 45MPG but I have installed a fuel management unit I got from eBay which increased power and MPG. Cost me £100 but is well worth it.

An ebay seller called zdmak has lots of special MB tools including a few Hazet. Not so many listings but go to his eBay store. Here is a link to the 5 sided torx you are looking for.

Hope that helps.

2003 e320 wagon (210 chassis NOT a 211))
SF to LA and back

You only win if you turn around and do the same thing in the other direction and get the same MPG. Wind along the I-5 corridor can be intense, and you don't notice it in a smooth well-riding e-class, especially since there are no trees or grass or anything to show the wind.

I recently went LA to Sac'to and got 29 going north, then only 24 going south (different days, different wind.)

Also, many of the "flat as a pancake" sections are not... they have a very slight, almost imperceptible (but significant) grade.

I have been averaging around 22mpg combined city/hwy. My commute is 27 miles, with about 23 of them on the highway, but the Sepulveda pass is half-way (the climb sucks more gas than the decent saves). And then the drive home is usually very traffic-y.

The best I ever did in the 02 E320 was 35mpg. Yes 35mph. 68mph. 4 people trunk full a/c on and a long long stretch of roads in the carolinas on I-95 heading to Florida. My girlfriends 97 E320 with 180,000 miles is getting about 29mpg at most. Clean filters, good plugs and upkeep will get you great MPG.

M104 engine. Factory or epa rated at 24hwy 17 city.
With some robust driving and a bit of slow speed driving to the hwy and back you could easily be getting just 22 hwy and be normal.

M112 all aluminum engines get much better mpg.

also you don't have the added benefit of the 722.6 electronically 5 speed overdrive transmission that adds greatly to the mpg of the later models.

Lastly if you insist calling it a Damn Benz it will start returning 18mpg hwy shortly

I have 1998 V6 and I noticed very important MPG ,when I am driving on the high way at 70 MPH the RPM is near 2500 RPM but when I drive my 1996 (L6) engine the RPM at 70 MPH is almost 3100 RPM, that makes alot of difference, beside I found my air filter all dirty today,, replaced it and noticed much better responce to picking up speed,
This is amazing and very important information for anyone who is searching for MPG facts.
Thank you all

My 2000 E320 is getting 35mpg with speeds averaging 72mph. I was shocked to see how well this car performed.

Noticing extremes

MPG in my 98 E320 ranges from 19 to 31. Only had the car since September & its previous owner, a dealership mechanic, recalibrated it to run on regular unleaded. I figure that saves me about 20 cents per gallon. I've started to notice that when I gas up at certain stations and pumps my mileage drops significantly, and cold weather seems to be a factor also. Think I'll check the air filter.

2002 E320 4matic Wagon
In my 1998 E320 4-matic, I average about 27.5 MPG on the road and about 22 in town. Could do slightly better on the road if I averaged 65mph, and slightly better in town if I wasn't in NYC. Not bad for a big AWD sedan, and significantly better than my old 1993 300TE 4-matic, my old 1992 300E 4-matic, or my old 2005 Audi allroad, and pretty much the same as my old 2007 R320 CDI 4-matic. All in all, I'm pretty pleased with it.
