Hi,
I purchased a FRAM F1102 plastic filter wrench that is designed to fit caps from 74-76mm. When I place it on my filter cap and try to unscrew the cap counter-clockwise, the wrench slips around the filter cap.
I noticed a small arrow in the filter cap point in a "Clockwise" direction. I just want to make sure that to loosen the filter cap I should unscrew it in a "counter-clockwise" direction.
Also, should I get a different filter wrench? If so, what do you suggest?

06 E320 CDI Oil Measuring MB Shop Tool
-Oil Dipstick: p/n 120-589-07-21-00 [Max 134mm Min 114mm.]
Tool purchased from MB Dealer. Max/Min obtained from dealer spec sheets - available for the asking.

I purchased the "shop tool" dipstick on- line from an automotive tool supplier.
I cannot say for certain that it is an M-B part. It has graduated marks on both the top and bottom of the stick (looks like mm), plastic spacers at about 6" intervals along the 1/4" wide ribbon, and an o- ring seal at the top. I read somewhere that you have to twist them as you insert the stick into the dipstick tube. Mine comes no where close to going in. No oil on the tip (grey plastic). I do not want to damage either the tool or the motor. Anyone have any experience?
I also bought the tranny shop tool and it is a coil spring. I have not tried it yet. At least it has low and full marked for hot and cold.

Excellent write up. Considering the Mobile-1 0w40 oil costs around $68 not counting a new filter and a local shop I trust that works on a lot of MB and BMW's quoted me about $90 to do it including oil, filter and labor... I figure my time involved is worth more than the $2 or $3 I'd save by doing it myself. Check with a shop like that before deciding to do it yourself and you might be surprised.

Thanks.
Adressing the remainder of your comment, your thoughts are well taken.
Read on:
1. 8 qts (required for this car) of M1 costs a maximum $45 in the Northeast at a premium, dealer price of $5.00 per qt.
2. Mercedes no longer advocates 0-40, having revised it to 05-40 for the Northeast!
3. Yes, it is for money saved that I go DIY route. Yes, I can do this job better than most, including pros. Lastly, it is the satisfaction of having done the job right - a conviction entertained over the last forty years of MB-dieseling.
4. Tougher jobs are doled out to more knowledgable friends - only after familiarizing myself with what is involved.
5. I no longer have to work for a living - literally.
Regards,

Awesome write-up. Was totally prepared to buy a vacuum extractor since it seems this is what the dealerships do, but I followed this guide to a T. Out came 8.5 quarts (or near to it as I could discern) and in went some fresh Mobil 1 0W-40, roughly 8.5 quarts.
As for costs, Fram filter - $12.00 (was in a rush and just bought this one at Kragen) and Mobil 1 0w-40 was on sale at Kragen for $5.00/qt. Score!
This will sound very jerry rigged, but to remove my filter I just used an old screw type steel rubber hose clamp (think it was the 4" diameter type). Placed it on the filter cover, took some channel locks to the beefy part of the clamp and voila. Came right off! Next change, I'll have the correct tool to do this job.

I would recommend you get the MB fleece filter to go the full mileage as in the FSS system. The conventional fram filter does not meet the same spec as the MB or Mann's filter.

I'm actually planning to do oil changes on this car, roughly every 5K which I believe is well below FSS specs.

Interesting! I actually had the last oil change done at a very reputable local indy (Charlie's Foreign Car in Encinitas). Cost - $100.00 They put in Elf oil and when I removed the oil filter, it was a paper filter, just like the Fram. Makes one wonder?!?

BTW: The 6-Qt 'sale' price of $40+ appearing on a current post is high - at least for the NE. Dealer price is $5 per Qt., avlbl at their parts counter.

Just did my first DIY oil change, and thanks to everybody that has contributed to the DIY section. As I was searching here, I did have a problem making sure I extracted oil from the oil dipstick and not the transmission dipstick.
I have a 2005 RWD 7-speed E500, and the oil dipstick is at the rear of the engine, and as some stated, the transmission dipstick was not visible with the engine cover on. The oil dipstick is easily visible.
I found the most important piece of info. was the fact that the oil dipstick cap comes right off wheras the tranny dipstick (if you can view both), has a cap which has to have its' seal broken.
Extracting was no problem.
I used 8 qts. per users manual.
Interesting thing is that there was approx. 9.5 qts. of oil extracted. MityVac 7201 holds 9.3 quarts, and then I had still some more to extract. I'm very disappointed in the dealer, bec. they serviced the car while she was under warranty.
From time-time I would get the "oil level high" after checking, but then after another check, I would get "oil level ok". So I thought nothing of it. And I thought "dealer knows best".
Research on this forum, has confirmed 8 qts. is the amount needed for an E500 oil and filter change, which is verified by the owners manual.
Thank you all once again for your help.
PS I do bel. this particular post should be a sticky! To the OP, great pics. on your draining method!!

Noticed no leaks.
Honestly, the oil filter was on very tight from when the previous dealer did the service......
What do you use?
Tks.
