Using scanner on E500

I have a software based scanner and want to scan my car for OBD codes.

So far I have conencted it to a C class and an E320 and while running most tests it says that the module is not installed or not responding. My only success has been with running the ME test on the E320. It actually came back with versions of hardware and software, etc.

Does anyone know if I need to have the car on while I run the scanner? Any other requirements?

fdk110.....

You only need "key on/ ignition off" to run initial scan. For live data streams " key on/ engine running" specific diagnostic test my require a combination of the two i.e. cylinder test, actuator test, contribution test, activate - deactivate etc. Make sure your connection at the OBDll port is secure and tight. On my E class the connection port needs a little force to ensure connectivity. A not responding message could also indicate a loss power source issue within the scan tool. Check power source (i.e. scantool battery etc.).
