COMAND HEAD UNIT software update to enable MP3
Mercedes COMAND HEAD UNIT Service CD W211 589 14 22 00
This is for 2003-2006 models with command unit.might also work for 2007-2009 yr model
use google
Use this CD to update the COMAND Head Unit to software version 46/06.
Unzip the archive and burn all of the files onto a regular CD-R disc, making sure that your software finalizes the disk when it's done. I use NERO, and on NERO it is listed under the "burn" tab on the verification screen just before the CD starts burning.
Once you have the CD, power up your COMAND unit, briefly hold down 1,3,8 at the same time, and the service screen should come up asking you to insert the CD. Insert the CD and the update will begin automatically. VERY IMPORTANT....DO NOT CHANGE SETTINGS OR TURN IGNITION ON OR OFF DURING THE UPDATE PROCESS.
Once the CD is done updating, it will eject the CD and the COMAND unit will restart itself. That's all there is to it.
My unit is a 2005 version, and I cannot attest to weather this will work in other versions, but I have read that it will work on all COMAND units.
If you do not have the Nav module, then this should still update your audio SW... but only if you have the COMAND Head Unit (the one with the large screen). If you have the smaller unit, I think it's called the Audio 50 (but don't quote me on that), then I don't think this will work for you.
Also, this IS NOT a map disc. This is simply the SW update for the COMAND system itself. This update will add a few features with the Navigation module (i.e., adds the ability to display ETA at the bottom of NAV screen) if you have it installed, but it also updates other audio items as well, like the ability to play MP3 discs.

works on 2004 aswell
guys i just did it on a 2004 e320 and it worked like a charm. plays MP3..Awsome.
update takes about 10 minutes. leave your car ignation on when performing the update. also when burning the files, burn it as a data cd and finalize the cd after burn. also burn it as "Disc at once" and name the disc as mercedes.

It appears the links were removed, probably due to forum rules violation.
The easiest way to see if you have the current version of the software is to press the SERV button and see if you see two car images in the background. If there is only an E-Class on the left, you have the older version. If there is an E-Class on the left and a CLS-Class on the right, you have the newer version.

burned to CD-R. Took a few minutes for comand to install. Reset and works. Now shows E and CLS in service section. Will try MP3 CDs and see what happens.
I love this place

Additional info: My COMAND does not just play mp3 CDs or DVDs but also Dual Layer DVDs with a capacity of 9 gb. So I never had this mp3 problem.

can you email me that update in zipped file?
what I was thinking is that some updates allows you to change between US and EURO specifications, you know, VIDEO instead of SAT, but if you have Euro Comand then you dont need that option.
Still can you send it, please?

thank so much

I did the update. I now see the two care in the serv tab. But b4 the update I could play mp3. I don't know y others couldn't. But I still don't have eta on nav dest. It only took away the bottom bar that had longitude latitude and elevation level. Does ne one have the estimated time of arrival on there command?

Hm, what exactly do you see on the bottom? There is a setting in the menu where you have to enable the ETA display.
About updates. I wrote that before: We should combined go and ask to fix glitches and put more features into our COMANDs. I mean Becker and MB should know that although newer cars are out there, many still drive the older ones. And even 2006/2007+ use the same COMAND and I would assume it would make perfect sense of providing even today updates to these devices.

The 13/04 US version will play MP3s, but has some issues playing some bitrates. The 46/06 version does a much better job playing MP3s.

i updated the software so hopefully this gets rid of that if it even had it.

Yes - the hardware is virtually the same - the software that is 46/06 came out in the MY07+ vehicles. You should be able to make reliable DVD MP3 media with the 46/06 software.

Yes- there is a newer one than 46/06 for US cars that was issued to add XM stations to Sirius SDARS that was released for 2008 cars.

How do you check for the firmware version of COMAND aside from what the background image looks like. I've seen it before but can't remember how to do it again.
