Little $3 project ...................... Fix your cup holder.

I got hot-coco spill into my cup holder.
And obviously, it got stuck and does NOT want to pop up.

So I yank it up and notice a spring just jump out... ( hell with it )
I dishwash the cup holder scrub it very well.
Spray high lub on the wheel area.

And heading to HomeDepot. ( Go to hardware section, you can choose any kind of spring of different tension. )

1. Make sure it does NOT exceed the length of rail.

2. simply insert spring into cup holder rail.

3. install it back to your car.

This is a very timley post, and the photos are a BIG help. I'll be enroute to my local hardware store this week as this appears to solve my recent cupholder problem.

Thanks!!

you're a star and your timing is impeccable...had to clean my cup holder also but I must have looked away and never saw the spring "take off" - still can't find it...looks like it made its way to home depot and I am off to bring it back home. Thanks for the pictures!

I got in the wife's car today with a cup of coffee and discovered the cup holder wouldn't come out. <G-Dammit!>

I went home and removed the unit...

I found three pieces after I pulled my cup holder out: small spring, cureld thin metal band, plastic barrel piece. I fixed it without using the small spring.

The base piece is what snaps into the bottom of the console. The cup holder piece is attached to the base (see pics above). The barrel piece is spool-like with two prongs coming out either side. The cup holder piece has the mount for this barrel at the bottom of it's rectangular shaft.

If you look at the base piece, on the side where the part number is listed, not the sticker but imprinted in the plastic, you'll see a small slit. This is where the T end of the metal band will come out. It'll point down.

With the unit in the 'out' position, insert the barrell into the center of the curled up metal band and place it in the bottom of the cup holder piece. Use your finger to rotate the metal band and barrel so that the T end of the metal band pokes out of the slit. You can apply pressure inwards to accomplish this.

Once you have the T end sticking out about a half inch, push down on the cup holder piece until its locks in its retracted state. That's all it took for me. It works again. Good luck...

E500 Cup Holder

Jeff

Great info above. However, I am having a difficult time. I have the cupholder out of the car.

What I found under the cup holder was a cylinder spring with a T top. I was out of the assembly and loose under the cup holder.

I can't figure how to get it reset. The piece that is seats in goes up into the cuphold interior when you open it up and I can't reach it to insert the spring into the slit. How do you do that?

Am I looking at this thing right?

Many thanks for any assistance. At the moment, I have the cup holder in one hand the the barrel shaped spring in the other.

Guys, this is a 2 year old thread. Externally hosted pics will often be removed by the poster after a certain amount of time.

For instance, this was the external link for his first pic : http://home.comcast.net/~richard.bellevue/spring1.jpg

He may not even have comcast anymore. Plus, the OP's last post in the forum was a year ago, Feb '08.

E320 Cup Holder

Great blog! I followed your instructions and was able to repair my cup holder even without the pictures. You saved me $90. Thanks.
