Replace differential??? damn....
Whats up guys,
So I went in for an oil change at the MB Dealership in Nanuet, NY and I said that I have road noise vibrating and whining pitching noises at different speeds. Good people, friendly staff. But with the diagnostics and road test with oil change all together came out to $170 which isnt bad I was expecting above $200. They said that the noises are not the wheel bearing but choppy tires that aggressive. Which I agree and my rear differential. They recommended I replace it and she said it would approximately be $6300. WOW really? I knew it was going to be pricey.... but damn... I didnt know it was gonna cost me that much. So I said let me think about it. Is this a fair price? (I know there are a lot of good indy shops out there but for something like this... Id rather take it to an actual dealerships) The sound was low at first but now after a few months its increasing. I dont have that kind of fund where I can dish out thousands of dollars.. maybe in the next couple months.. but would it be safe to drive or will it snap soon. Anyone else have this problem or any comments? Would be helpful. Thanks.

Differential failures seem too common
Ours went at about 51,000. It was covered by warranty (with a factory rebuilt), but the dealer's service manager showed me an estimate of c. $2200.00. This is something I usually think of as a half-million mile part.

I just had my 08 350 4M in for a regularly scheduled wallet emptying (B service) and I told the dealer that I just started hearing excessive road noise. I thought it might be because tires need replacing (which they do, but not the point).
They told me that both the differential and the RR wheel bearing were bad and replaced both, under warranty. I asked how much this would have cost out of warranty and they told me about $7000. I have about 38K miles on the car.
Other than a squeaky blower motor, that took me several visits to get them to "hear" and repair it - I have had no problems.
I am very concerned now. I was planning on driving this one for a long time, since the 07's and up are supposed to be good. I'm thinking there may be a Lexus in my future before it gets to 50K and I run out of warranty!!!

PS: It is a shame that Mercedes seems to be making these cars as throw-away cars where after the warranty is out in some cases, a major repair does not justify the underlying value of the car.

Well, at $5000+ for the 7/100 warranty, the cost is almost as insane as the cost to repair things that, especially on these class of cars, shouldn't fail in the first place.
I'd consider buying it for around $3000 - but, most likely at 48K miles, I'll dump it.
Sad, I love the car.

Ironically, I was actually thinking just that.
Then I read the thread about the M272 engine problem - yikes!
If I even think the least bit about keeping this car - the warranty is an absolute must.

So I finally took my Indy mechanics advise.. and changed tires to the Bridgestone Turanza Serenity tires.. and guess what..... no more noise.. it was simply amazing.. like the tires I had before, I was wondering how the hell did it make so much noise that it was unbearable? Now, the car is soundproof. So instead of $6300 for a new differential, I spent $1003.98 for new tires. Way better. Im so pissed at the dealership for either lying, or making a guestimate!

You might want to consider adding the Mercedes 7 year 100K miles extended mile warranty to your car but at this point it seems like one of the most expensive items have already failed and been replaced.

Wouldn't an 08 with 36K miles still be under factory warranty?

It was still under the original warranty. However, now it is under a 6 year 75K mile extended factory warranty That will take me another 3 years and/or 37K miles.
If you like to plan ahead... the car will be for sale in approximately 2 years, 9 months with around 74K miles. In case your future plans call for buying an 08 E350 4MATIC!

I still have one differential from a 05 E55 with 20,000kms and another one from a 07 E63 with 5,000kms. Let me know if any of the two will work for you.

If your car has been serviced regularly at an authorized MB dealer
I'd ask them nicely to speak with MB USA and see If there is
anything they will do. Mine went out 55k miles for no reason and he factory stepped up with the parts a d the labor was charged at the warranty rate.
While I wasn't thrilled the bearing and diff went out I was treated fairly.

Don't know if this makes any difference but when I changed my OEM idle pulley on the engine I found bearings from China. Perhaps they are putting "made in china" bearings in the differential. Best bearings were US/Swedish such as Timken, Fafner, SKF. Didn't have much luck with other bearings in heavy duty applications. I built one gear box using Timken and it ran continuous service for over 25 years with no bearing issues. Not too bad for my table cloth design.
