what does a steering angle sensor do?

I think the steering angle sensor is on the steering shaft, behind the airbag on steering wheel? The steering angle sensor relays info to the ESP unit to correct the car when losing control.

^^^ yes that is what it does and i need to replace mine because my car keep shooting out a message saying ESP inoperative and i read on the forums its the steering angle sensor. i have tried to calibrate mine but nothing. So now i need a replacement.

basically i read if your car keeps receiving a error message that states ESP INOPERATIVE and cruise control not available it is your steering angle sensor! another thing my car is doing is on start up it doesn't go into gear sometimes even after i hold down the brake, so i am guessing the car thinks the wheel is locked due to its steering angle sensor. correct me if i am wrong. thanks

I just had mine replaced under warranty and under notes it says sync and calibrate with SDS. I'm note sure if you can just slap it on and be good. You might have to set it up with the SDS.

im not under warranty no more mine just finished 2 months ago and was told the extended warranty does not cover this so im assed out. im going to take it to a side mercedes benz shop and see what they say.

That should be replaced under extended warranty...mine was.

Are you sure your alignment is OK? If your wheels are out of alignment for more than 5% angle then that will also throw the code. I got the same code when i changed my tie rod ends and an alignment fixed it. You probably will need SDS to make sure it's the sensor. It could be anything that leads up to the steering angle sensor including the wire harness to the electronics on the steering wheel. Good Luck anyways. Maybe just swapping the part will be cheaper than the labor charged to diagnose.

BTW - search the forum for steering wheel replacement to get how to instructions on getting to the sensor.

$500.00 was billed to my 3rd. party extended warranty company to diagnose, parts and labor to replace the sensor. Might be worth it to have them diagnose and complete the job.

I just got the ESP inoperative thing this morning as well. I noticed that my steering wheel is not aligned with the wheels. Any suggestions on how this gets resolved and for how much before i head out to the dealership?

I got my steering angle sensor changed last month at MB and it ran me about USD 800, incl a alignment, you can do it yourself I was told, I just didn't have the right tools as you have to get in behind the steering wheel, airbag etc. Just remember to reset it the steering wheel when done and (get an alignment).

mine started out like that, ESP failure which would disappear when i restarted the car, it became more and more frequent. Finally last month it was on constantly. I toke it in to MB and they ran a test on it and it was the steering wheel angle sensor which had gone bad.

I would think if it's the only error you are getting it would be similar issue, but if you get other failures, limb mode etc as well it could be more serious issues.

This was so sudden. The wife and an S550 backed up into each other in a parking lot, no body damage as they were just beginning to back out. The S had some blemishes on its bumber though, nothing on mine. Then this morning the light came on then i noticed the alignment was off. I dont think they are correlated though.

From what the MB told me it happens over time and it is a known issues with our cars. The smallest things can trip the sensor when it has gone bad, mine was a bump on the road, yours a small accident. My steering wheel was slightly off to the left after it happened, but MB did not think it was related. Try to reset your steering wheel from lock to lock and then back to center. But I'm afraid that you are having the same issue as I did.

Thanks Ben! Just called the dealership- I will drop it off tonite and pray that the extended CPO covers it.

If you are out of alignment you should get an alignment before you change your sensor. If the steering is off +/- 5 degrees, you will get an ESP inoperative warning. Once it is aligned, it should be back to normal.

So the steering angle sensor was replaced under warranty, however, they want $250 to do the alignment. Really? Dont the angle sensor and the alignment come as a package? Why would you fix one and leave the other? How else would you know if you have completed the job satisfactorily?? Should I go to a tire place and have them do the alignment?

They did that to me as well, and honestly I think its bull**** that they don't include that as a service considering the amount of money most people throw at these cars. I personally do not use INDY's when it comes to things like electrics, internal engine and drive-train. I simply do not trust them to do a proper job, and I don't think they are knowledgeable enough about our cars. They are more like to mess something up that is going to be more expensive to fix then the alignment at MB.

My philosophy about these cars, if I can't do it myself then I take it to MB to get the diagnostics and then take it from there. I've personally had my fingers burnt to many times from trying to jump corners, I'm sure there is people here who would disagree with me, I have just not found a trust worthy Indy shop.
