How is the performance of the 2007 e550? I am buying it next week and how much does it cost to maintain the car? maintanance? oil change? brakes? and other small stuff. Do I need to worry about any issues in the beginning? I am new to mercedes benz LOL

You will love the power at your disposal. The engine and performance is phenomenal. Are you getting the vehicle with 4Matic? I highly recommend that you do so. In 4 months of ownership I have yet to have an opportunity to truly push the car as I always seem to run out of road It is especially nice on the highway. The first time you open up the throttle, you will understand what I mean! Going from 60-something to 90-something in about 3 seconds is scary when you realize how much trouble you can be in if you get clocked by a cop at that rate of speed -- not that I'd ever do anything like that, obviousely

Enjoy your new ride. The E550 is probably the last Mercedes non turbo charged V8 engine with raw and instant power. Maintenance is probably going to be more expensive than what other cars would cost but the experience is worth it!

Bro, I looked it up all that stuff on tireracks for tires, oil change can be done after 7,000-10000 miles and brakes pads are not really that expensive. Overall, it is good. thanks take care

I have had an 08 E550 since late November. It's much bigger than my last car, 08 VW R32, so I'm still getting used to the size. The car is very smooth, build quality is good. The car is a german Buick, it's very basic in function, yet over programmed internally.

If you don't need the trunkspace and will never have more than 4 people in the car, also check out the CLS, it's the same frame, and you can find them for same price if you look hard enough. Fit and finish is a little sportier.

The seats are comfortable, if you get CPO it will cover the airmatic and fiber optic, which some aftermarket warranties may not cover.. so might be better to drop down to the E320 if you are buying outright.

The 55 is a supercharged V8. The 65 is a bi-turbo V12. The 63 is a NA V8.

I come realized that our annual or every 10k miles for service is prettyy reasonable comparing with other manufacture. If u can find deals and coupons for services, maintaining an MB is as simple and cheap just as any other car

08 E550 .. had it since brand new, took 3 months to get it from Germany, but worth the wait .. you'll love it.

What kind of car are you coming from? That will gauge your perspective on its performance.

I have an 07 E550 4matic. Let me start by saying that it is deceptively fast. Sure the torque is great and you are pushed back in your seat, but the smooth ride can make you feel like you are going slower than you actually are. Omitting the AMGs, Ms, RSs, SRTs, and other special models, you should be able to beat or hang with probably over 90% of the cars on the road today. I love my 550.

I've owned my 07 E550 4Matic with 49.5K miles for 1.5 years. To-date it's been very reliable. The only major problem I've had was the AWD transfer case that was replaced under warranty (a known problem with early cars). I've replaced my sport wheels with OEM 5-spoke AMG wheels, replaced my pedals with AMG pedals, changed my air filters to K&N, installed Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus tires, added a rear spoiler, painted my calipers silver (they rust), changed my brake pads to ceramic Akebono, bought a Bluetooth puck off eBay, replaced my hood star oranment with a flat hood ornament, had all my windows tinted 20% (blocks 80% of the UV), subscribed to Sirius/XM radio and removed the silver slats on my fog lights (it looks a lot better!). Next mod later this month will be a Powerchips ECU reflash that will boost the hp to 405 and the tq to 410.

Needless to say I like the car, it's a good daily driver (current use), gets reasonably good gas mileage (around 18-20), it's comfortable and seats four adults, it handles well and has enough performance to keep you interested, the trunk space is excellent, but the NAV is lousey so I keep a Garmin in the glove box. Overall it's been good reliable car but you've got to keep up with the fairly expensive maitenance so find a good independent dealer for all your service work. The 07-09 E550 IMHO is the best of the W211's and it should last a long trouble free time if you maintain it.

I say go test drive one. It will probably feel like a huge boat when compared to your Civic. Also, while maintenance on the 550 may be better when compared to earlier W211s, it is safe to assume that it will be more than your Civic. Oil changes require synthetic oil, so forget the cheap Jiffy lube oil changes. Also, with gas prices rising, you must consider that you will get less mpg in the 550. You will also be using premium. Not trying to discourage you. Just giving you some food for thought.

I'll echo the comments already made, I love my 2007 E550 4Matic.

I was thinking of an AMG, but I really need a car I can use for the winter and unfortunately, an E55 or E63 just doesn't make sense in that regard. Hence the 4Matic.

After I made the choice to go 4Matic, I was a bit sad, thinking of all the power I was giving up for logic and practicality.

Until I found out about the E550 (up from the E500, which I did know about).

This car is a total sleeper in many ways. Since it's not as tightly sprung as an AMG or M, it doesn't FEEL as fast as it actually is. Nail it from a stop and you get a brief instant of gut-wrenching torque but it quickly becomes civilized even as you hurtle towards speeding ticket oblivion. It's too graceful to show the speed. I completely agree with MyFirstAMG on this one...deceptively fast sums it up perfectly.

The E63/C63 has stolen most of the automotive press thunder, and deservedly so, it's an amazing engine.

However...when you look closely, the E550 isn't really far behind. The E63 has a 0-60 time of about 4.4s, with some variation. The E550 has book times of about 5.2s, but many sources, including Car & Driver report sub-5s times (4.8s).

There is also the price difference...substantial premium for the AMG. Yes, the AMG offers many perks but if you get the E550 with the Sport package, you also get upgraded brakes (drilled rotors, larger 4-piston calipers) and a lowered air suspension. So, I would say you're getting close to 80% of the AMG's performance for a substantial cost difference. You can also get AWD, which was the clincher for me.

So what's not to like?

Part of why I love Mercedes is that they always make a few sleeper models like the E550. It's a graceful, conservative 4-door sedan that many younger drivers will discount at a glance. Until you floor it and that massive 5.5L V8 wakes up...total wolf in sheep's clothing. They are also comparatively rare...and I've yet to meet an E550 owner who doesn't love their car.

Well, for 2011 this engine is replaced by a 5.5 biturbo engine, but the badges will still read "63."

The older AMGs called "55" were supercharged (not turbocharged) in most applications (not SLK).

The 5.5 V8 of the E550 is really a great motor and so much better balanced than the V6. There's no comparison. The V6 feels rough and noisy to me. I think overall that the 550 is a better value over the E350. You also get leather (although it's kind of coarse) and airmatic. And mpg differences are minuscule between the V6 and V8 in real world daily driving.

But there is a big difference between the E63 and the E550. I drove both back to back several times when I was selling my E350. I almost bought the E550 but there's much more to the E63 over the E550. They are not the same brakes nor the same suspension. And the tranny software is vastly different. Then you have things like soft Napa leather and much better seats, etc.. Plus a big factor for me was that I bought during the economic meltdown when nobody was selling anything. I ended up getting a new E63 for the price of an E550. That pretty much sealed the deal.

p.s., what makes the 5.5 feel like it does is that the max torque comes on earlier in the rpm band than the 6.2.
