help for a newbie: gas pump stops and spits gas with every gallon.
I've asked the dealership and my independent mechanic and neither seem to have a clue. Seem like it would be something simple like a gauge in the gas tank or something. I did searches but I'm new to this forum, not sure how it functions.
Heres what happens:
Any time I pump gas it the pump stops every 1.00 or 2.00 and gas spits back out. It takes me 5-10 minutes to fill my tank and everytime it stops the gas gets all over the rear panel and leaks into some sort of drain and leaks out under the right rear tire. I know the gas spitting back out has something to do with the gas pump thinking the tank is full but not sure why this happens. Any similiar experiences or ways to fix?
Thanks.

Stop trying to put in the cheap stuff! Seriously, this is usually the result of the evaporative emissions charcoal canister getting liquid petrol in it. The purge valve may be bad, you may have overfilled the tank at some point (don't fill it until it overflows), or there may be some other problem like a kinked line. Your indy or the dealer should be able to deal with it.

I wish that was the case.
I usually mention it when I was bringing my car in for other services and maybe they didn't check it out or spend much time with it because I didn't describe it right. As for my indy mechanic, he's good but deals with mostly older Mercedes, like 70's and 80's models. He can't figure it out.
Maybe I will take it by a different dealer.
thanks.

This diagram will give you an idea of the parts incorporated into the closed fuel evaporation system, as mentioned it may be shutoff valve (150), charcoal canister (90), regeneration valve (10) or possibly kinked/blocked breather pipe/hose (i.e.: 70).
Shutoff valve 0004707193 (for comparison shopping, parts.com $126.50)
Charcoal canister 2114700559 (232.30)
Regeneration valve 0004705593 (52.32)

Is this a wagon?
When we first acquired our 2006 in 2008, it took a while for me to find the right set of moves to get the pump nozzle all the way into the filler -- it has to be at a little bit of an angle clockwise from vertical to go all the way in properly, and even then, it can't take the maximum notch in most systems; I have to be a little patient and use the slower setting.

Same for sedan & wagon in addition there is a hose (155) and filler neck (150) that leads to charcoal filter attached to fuel tank filler neck that may be blocked.

Spilling over during fueling (empty tank or not)
I'm having the same problems with my 06 CLS55 AMG. I just replaced the level sender/pressure sensor/plumbing assembly on the driver's side as mine was spilling fuel out of the pressure sensor and filling the back seat with fumes from sloshed fuel all over the top of the tank area. It's been a horrible mess.
Now, about two weeks later it started the spilling over thing on fill-up. I mean even on a nearly empty tank it begins doing this at about $1.5-ish and then it requires adding fuel at a rate of about $1 at a time and stopping so it can purge air; otherwise it spits it out and spills to the ground.
I'm also smelling raw fuel when the car sits and idles. One day I noticed fuel under the rear axle area towards the driver's side. I love the car and it's performance but all the fuel issues are killing me.

Hi, I have a similar problem with P0443 and P0422('00 E 320), and Is there any diagram of EVAP system like posted by koningstiger's in this forum or same as his attached FN.pdf(82.kb) ?
I'm thinking one seal on charcoal canister failure or, I try to search the my problem (210) but I couldn't find members report on this forum. Sorry, if I missed.
I just want to see the picture. TIA 003stars

Yeah, just swapped out the charcoal canister and shut-off valve and that fixed the fueling problem. I'm still getting the check gas cap and wondering if its the regeneration valve or something else more serious. This car has been a fuel system mess since purchased years ago; but we're getting there!

I'm not sure what MBUSA is thinking, but this is a nightmare that is bringing nothing but bad publicity to the brand. As a corporation, repairing this problem would have cost them nil. As a MB owner, I will have to seriously think about owning another MB.
Hey MB, Toyotas, Nissans, and Hyundais do NOT have anything pervasive along this mess you have on your hands! Treat your customer base right!

Fuel leak
Hi guy's I'm new to this site but had the same problem with my car E320. Its seems that ever time I try to fill it up it just spit the fuel back out and some times I will find fuel under the car when it's park or even have a strong fuel odor coming into the car when park. Well it turn out to be a seal between the tank and the filler hose that was broken and once it was replace my problem was solved hope this helps.
