Trunk Auto Close failure 2006 E320 CDI

Hello all. About a week ago, I gave a ride to a friend. He got out of the car and retrieved something out of the trunk which I opened from the door panel. He manually closed the trunk without using the Auto Close button on the trunk lid. The Auto Close button has not worked since then. It is slightly difficult to manually close the trunk and when popping it open with the door button or key fob, it only 'pops' open and does not open all the way (the way it used to). I've searched the forum for answers but other than pump and air leak issues, I don't see anything specific for my car. Your guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance. My car is a 2006 E320 CDI with about 100k miles.

I haven't taken the inside panels off yet to check anything. I figured that if it was a fuse, I might not have to go through all the extra trouble. I did disconnect the negative battery cable and re-attach it after a few minutes. No luck. Where would I find the possibly broken wires? Thanks for responding

Panel, left side. The moving wires near the left hinge.

Mine was fixed just about a week ago.

Update and request for guidance ... Yesterday, I took the trunk interior panels off to see if I could identify any obvious problems. Actually, I took off the drivers side panels. There were no broken wires, no unplugged items, and nothing appearing to be pinched. My next step was to check every fuse in the car, both in the trunk and on the left side of the dashboard. At least that's all of the fuses I am aware of. All were ok. Next, I pressed the trunk auto closer button and listened for any sounds. There was a sort of click coming from the black plastic (controller) box directly behind what appears to be the closer motor. When I say behind, I mean towards the back of the car from the motor. With my finger on the black box, I can feel a clicking of sorts with each press of the button. Also, by pressing the closer button, it activates the soft close at the latch. Any thoughts what my next step should be? Thanks in advance.

if your friend hamfisted the trunk closer, I'd guess he tweaked some mechanicals in the gear box. Having never had to try to disassemble said closer box, I don't know what to look for but that's where I'd start.

It is frustrating when folks who don't know how a Benz works try to make something work in other ways than it was designed to work. Usually, something breaks. My line to guests of my car: "If you have to force it, you're doing it wrong".

Check angle detection sensor (b24/16), may need to clear/adjust or replacement. See attached 219 bulletin, same for 211. Part # should be 2118201597.

Thanks for this detailed info! worth trying replacing the sensor.
Checked on ebay for part# 2118201597, however, the seller specifies that it only fits car from 2007-2009. Is the part # universal and will actually fit my 2005 E320 CDI even if it says incompatible? I am definitely newbie in the MB world.

Just changed the sensor, still does not work. Should I hook up with the STAR system to clean the error based on the bulletin? help wanted.

Mine did that at one point, but I was able to get it to work again without Star. Try to normalize it by opening and closing all windows and holding the button for a few seconds afterwards. Same with the sunroof. Also what happens when you use the button inside on the driver's door? You can pull up and push down on it to close it.

brought the car to dealer today. Their diagnosis indicated bad trunk lid control unit/module.

dealer quoted for $1200.
I went to ebay and bought the following part for 60 bucks (recycled from used car):

replaced the part in 1 minute. voila, the automatic trunk worked beautifully.
