Cool '03 E500 Interior lighting possessed

Help!!! for no apparent reason, the interior lighting (dome, footwell, radio) all started acting up. The dome lights come on and off while driving for no apparent reason, the control switches are useless for the map and dome lights - the dash lights are fine thank god, but the day/night setting on the radio unit is also erratic and doesn't respond to ambient light - it changes from day to night setting about every 15 seconds.

I'm sure there is a computerised control unit that does all the wonderful stuff that's going bad - any idea where it is or any other suggestions? Voltage spikes? This is beginning to smell very expensive....

Do these happen independent of each other? It sounds like it might just be going in and out of day/night mode. If so, check the sensor near the top of the windshield and make sure it is free of any obstructions for starters, otherwise it may be this unit.

The light problem is intermittent and occasionally everything works correctly, but then different lighting malfunctions: ambient dome light, radio, climate control lights, irregardless of whether it's day or night. Most recently dome light just came on and stayed on - couldn't turn it off. I'm sure there's a control unit that went haywire.

Might just be a wiring harness or control unit, not sure which one (or which ones actually exist lol) so I would take it to a dealer or indie for diagnosis. Maybe we can get Otto to reply I think he's an expert.
