Home Link Connection not working

I have an 03 e500 that I just picked up. I've been trying to hook up the home link to my garage opener and it's not working. the previous owner hooked his home link to his garage opener successfully. I followed the steps that I found on a few forums and they are not working.

1) press button 1 and 3 for 30 seconds to reset.
2) Press and hold both the garage opener remote and home link button. It will blink slowly than fast.
3) Go to your Garage Opener and press the learn button. Within 30 seconds go to your car and press the homelink button three times each for 3 seconds.

I also tried a few other methods, like resetting my garage opener. the first step worked, but the second step did not. I pressed my home link button and the remote button at the same time and held it. its suppose to blink slow than fast, but it justs blinks slowly.....

has anyone else had this problem?

Easy to watch/learn video:

http://www.homelink.com/program/watchvideo

Our cars have a tiny yellow LED under the mirror to watch blink. The last 2 steps are for those (relatively) newer devices that use "rolling codes".

So it's not just me... I had mine successfully programmed to my old garage door opener. I moved and cannot get it to take the transmitter code(step 2). This sucks as I have to ride around with a transmitter on my visor. Not sure what happened. This is a lift master, my old unit was a chaimberlin. If you find out something, please share.

Mine won't take the second step either.

I just figured out what I was doing wrong. On my ride, the key has to be in the second position to take the code, even though the first position operates the Home Link.
