Mercedes recommended torque or spark plug recommended torque?

Changing my spark plugs this weekend in my 2007 E350 (124,600 miles). I'll be installing NGK laser iridium P/N: NGK PLKR7A. Mercedes E350 manual states a torque setting of 15-22 lb-ft. The NGK site states 10.8-14.5 lb-ft. Which one is correct?

Here's the NGK link: http://www.ngksparkplugs.com/tech_su...e.asp?mode=nml

One other quick question, is there a recommended torque setting for the ignition coil's bolts?

Thanks!

Much like lugs and tire pressure, I would go off of what Mercedes recommends in their technical manuals, it's specific to your engine so that makes the most sense to me.

Not to hijack this thread, but for the E550 I assume the laser iridium would work as well? For some reason they only said the OEM style platinum is the one that works on the M273 can anyone verify this? Because of the M272 and M156 can use them not sure why the E550 can't.

Yeah, I was thinking low end of mercedes torque spec and call it a day. I wonder why Mercedes and NGK are so far apart??

NGK doesn't know what there going in, so that could account for the conservative number, I,d use the Merc spec, I,m sure the plugs wont be stressed. Further doubt call NGK.

Ok, I guess I'll just set my digital torque wench to 18.5 ft/lb. Anyone know what ft/lb Mercedes dealers use?

Call up a service manager at your local dealership, might actually vary

First plug change at 124,000, careful, stone cold engine, might be prudent to remove coils then spray wd40 down the plug holes and allow it to seep into the threads, or break loose the plugs then spray to ease removal, that is a long time for plugs, take care. Just FYI check the gap coming out and also the gap going in, I like a little never seize on the threads just to ease my mind. Sorry never used a torque wrench in my life for plugs, born with a wrench in my hand.

Impressive, I could not get a torque wrench on the last plugs due to space. I hand tightened them to compress the copper gasket and when it got hard to turn stopped. Guess it was my over 65 elbow clicking when to stop.

Thanks for everyone's help. New spark plugs installed. The old plugs came out real easy. Only issue, the fruitcake before me stripped an ignition coil bolt head. Such a pain to remove! Anyhow, bolt replaced and new NGK plugs installed at 18 ft lb. All new filters, oil, serpentine belt, pulley, and tensioner pulley too. My new baby is purring like a kitty now. So glad to be back in a Mercedes. For good measure I removed UV scratches from the navigation screen and fixed the glovebox too. This website has been such a great help!

Here she is, 100% stock. Only modification, the Mercedes hood ornament is off my 2005 C230. Back in 2010 I got hit head on by a cargo van with a combined speed of 80 mph. I walked away with just a broken kneecap. My C230 gave her life to save mine. The only thing I saved from my totaled C230 was the hood ornament. I thought I'd pay my respects by flying her star on my E350.

Oh wow, touching story... so sorry to hear about the fate of the C230, but that's proof of Mercedes engineering nonetheless and glad you're okay. I hope you have your E for many years and it's a good car for you, pretty neat to have the old hood ornament protecting you on the E350 nowadays

For the E550 guys,

What size spark plug socket did you use?? I have tried various sizes and STILL cannot find the right size.

The dealer wants $420.00 to change and that is with me supplying the plugs?????

The coil bolt specs are 9Nm doesn't matter 6 or 8 cylinder.

Great info for torque specs. I'm going to be doing plugs in a week or two when I change the oil. I wish we had a single sticky thread that had all this type of useful information in it.

Ok I did the bubble test with the help of my son when the engine was hot. Revved up to 3000, no bubbles, turned lock to lock a couple of times at 2000, still no bubbles in reservoir.
one thing I noticed is that the whining/screeching is much less when the engine is warm.
If the speed is stuck, would it have the same effect.
Thanks

2005 C230
Can you tell me what the recommended spark plug gap on the NGK Laser Iridium for my 2005 C230? I plan to change them next weekend. First spark plug and ignition coil change with ~90K miles.
