Pain! E320 V6 ALTERNATOR ON OM642 ENGINE

Well what a royal pain, need to change (or at least clean and change voltage regulator) alternator, post an oil spill which has killed the alternator.

After much manouvering, intercooler pipe off, various intake pipes off and coolant pipe off, I have got the alternator as far as attached pic.

Just cannot get it out! Anyone managed this, I have had suggestion of moving glow plug module, but there is a seeming unmovable pipe beneath that so I dont think that will help.,

Taken a few pics on the way thru, so when all done, I will write up some stuff as there is not much info on the v6 rather than i6.

But do watch out with oil top ups and getting the oil cap on tight or you too may experience the same pain! Its reported a lot on the chrysler threads where they have same engine,

Anyway hoping someone has done this and has an easy answer, maybe fan out>? if anyone has a link to that for this model that would be great.

I sure hope this is not a "Oh I can do that--- customer car"

You need to remove the front charge air channel---then you need to remove the muffler downstream of charge air cooler--then remove the mixing chamber--then pass the alternator through/between engine and fan!

For eighteen bucks you can subscribe to WIS for 24 hours and print the fifteen page removal instructions!!

15 Pages to remove an alternator??????

What about pulling the fan and radiator?
Would that work, (and maybe be easier)?

I think you have lost sight of the objective, we are going to use factory alternator removal instructions to remove the alternator----we are not trying to scrap or dismantle the car!!

I know this goes against your philosophy, but is there a chance that there are methods better suited to the driveway mechanic than those recommended by the manufacturer for their service department?

I don't think it is a philosophical issue at all.

I think the issue surrounds understanding ones lmitations! There are some repair jobs that just can't be safely done with the front end on ramps.

On this model car/engine the removal of the alternator is a *****(time wise) on a lift. I would not attempt the removal in the driveway!

Are there other than factory suggested removal techniques---like hunt and peck or ok lets remove this and see what happens----I guess so!! But I would never suggest something like that.

I know years ago engine bays were large and a altenator was hanging off the upper R or L side---ten minutes to replace---just call a dealer and ask them what there charge time is for replacing an alternator on a 642

If you call a dealer they will open the same book they pull all their estimates from.
While , I have not attempted the alt replacement on my GL320 (Luckily when I left my oil cap loose, I caught it before the alt was soaked) I would bet there are other ways to get it out bedsides the almighty WIS instructions.

As an example, the WIS instructions for replacing the thermostat on my E350 said I had to remove the auxiliary air pump.
In fact, it needed to be moved about 1/4 inch to the side to clear one of the T-stat mounting bolts, and while that did require removing all but one mounting bolt and loosening the final one, it did not require removing any of the hoses or wires.

From the picture it looks like he is just a bit short on space, and maybe just removing the radiator fan would yield enough space.

Another good source, but again, not the only way to do many jobs.

I have WIS now from a very kind person. It turns out I had worked out all that needed removing and had not removed any extra with the exception of front floor tray, So the answer to the puzzle is that it comes out the bottom. So I reckon working with manual and hindsight about 1.5 to get it out.

I will regret saying that I am sure, but I think once tray is off it will be straight forward.

Done

It was easy once the fan and shroud were out. Copper Slip Rings replaced on alternator, 30.00.
