2005 E500 Hesitation & Check Engine Light

My 2005 E500 just had what seemed to be a big misfire where while accelerating it just cut-out for a second, but then continued just fine. The next time I started it the Check Engine light came on and I started noticing a hesitation when taking off from a light or stop sign. Once the RPMs are up it is ok, just from a start. I haven't taken it to the shop to get the codes read yet, but I thought I would check in with all the experience on this forum to see if anyone had any ideas what could be wrong. Your insight is appreciated. Thanks.

Spark plugs, coils, injectors, maf and probably some other things I am missing. Sadly on a car with so many electronic systems we really need codes to help you out.
Get those codes pulled you can DIY with a $20 scanner that supports can, auto parts stores or of course dealer/Indy.
How many miles are on the car and what maintenance have you done?

There are just over 121,000 miles on the car. I have kept up with the maintenance. I will visit a local independent to see if they can pull the codes for me and we'll go from there.

Yes, spark plugs, ignitions coils, and ignition wire issues can reduce power output. Definitely get codes and see what is going on. If you want to DIY these you can follow these instructions here. Otherwise, if it turns out to be something else, check out our other DIY tech articles here for assistance. Good luck!

Technician found code P02004 which he says has something to do with a hot wire going to the air mass meter. Does this make sense?

if you are going to replace the mass airflow sensor, amazon.com has the Bosch one at a very good price. It's an easy DIY install.

As Samaritrey says, when on amazon.com, make sure that you do not get anything automotive from a marketplace partner, only buy stuff that says "ships from and sold by amazon.com". That's the only way you will know you have something genuine.

How is it idling? If it has issues a trick we always do in the w203 section (I assume it works on a w211) is with the car off obviously unplug the MAF and run the car if it smothers out you found your issue. When it is unplugged it runs on default map.

If you do buy a replacement MAF make sure you get it from a trusted place and only buy BOSCH! I got mine from amazon for my w203 a few years back and it was genuine Bosch just make sure it comes from them and not someone else.
