Question 2008 E550 rear sunscreen stays up

I've been looking through threads and can only find information on the c class. I'm sorry if I missed a post but here goes. Up to a couple of weeks ago I was driving a W210 E320. She was getting a little old so I passed her on. I took possesion of a 2008 E550 nicly accomondated. Took a test drive (about 5 miles on various roads) and checked that everything was working. I had my friend in the rear checking all those controls and sun screens. Raised the rear sunscreen and lowered it. All in order. Three days later, with cash in hand, I picked up my new baby. On the way home. probably showing off a bit, I raised the sunscreen. It went up about 2/3 of the way and stopped. Pressed the button again and it raised all the way. Thats where it remained. Was hearing a little clicking while depressing the button but no movement. I removed the rear seat, both pieces, and after two days of poking got out all three headrests. With all of this out of the way I thought I would be able to remove the package shelf and get to the motor. Not as easy as it sounds. Has anyone with a E series removed the sunscreen? Please, please tell me the secret. I have removed 4 screws from the underside and it seems to move but not coming out. I know everything is over engineered but give me a brake.

You should have someone push down on the suncreen while the button is being actuated...

+1. This method worked on my E55. I only drive the car twice a week and I think I only rolled down the rear sunshade maybe no more than 8 times since I bought the car. Thats why its better to use all your car features/options from time to time to put them to work.

In my hand

I finally got everything out. Thanks for all your help boys. Now that the shelf is out I can get the motor working. Alot of work for a sunscreen that I may never use again.

By the way I did try the other method. Pushing down while depressing the button. I can see how that could work now that I have it all apart. Working well on the bench. Got a bigger hammer.

It gets even better. I have completely removed everything, the seats, headrests, speakers, panels and finally the shelf. I removed the screen from the panel and bench tested it. Seems to work perfectly. Used a motorcycle battery to supply the 12 volts. Put the + from the battery to the post marked + on the motor. Screen rises. Now I reverse the polarity. + from the battery to the unmarked terminal and the - from the battery to the + on the motor (basically reversed the polarity on a DC motor) Screen retracted smoothly and quickly. This leads me to believe the motor is good.
Next step. Check the connector to the motor. I connect a DC meter on the 20V scale + to +. I have someone press the screen button and I get 12VDC. This would raise the screen. After a few moments the meter returns to zero which I assume means the screen would be fully up. With the meter still connected (not moving any leads) I once again have the button pushed. Nothing. No voltage, nothing. After waiting a few moments again I have the button pushed. Again I have the 12VDC at the connector. This is leading me to believe the the polarity is not being change to lower the screen.I have tested fuse#20 in the trunk and fuses 31 and 41 by the drivers door. All are good. I know I'm missing something, there has to be a relay or something to reverse the polarity. I hope there's someone out there that can point me in the right direction.

Yes there should be a relay on the top of your rear sam that controls this along with a few other things on the same curcuit your rear sunshade is on. WIS wiring diagrams should be your next step. Id guess your relay is intermittently sticking, your lower control panel is intermittently faulty and or your rear sam isnt always processing the request or signal you are sending out by actuating the button. STAR would be beneficial right now. You could process the fault, follow the guided test and step by step decipher whats really going on... Good luck!

Thanks, I don't have WIS. Tried my local library but the printouts were just too small and can only print black and white.
As far as STAR goes, I'll have to go to my local Benz guy and hope he can figure out whats going on.
I looked at the pictures and they really only show fuse #20 and call that a relay (again, small pics) I'm thinking this Benz will never have a rear screen again. Reinstall with it down and remove the fuse. Going to Ebay and look for a copy. All help is welcome.

Mine wasn't working when I got it and when I took it back to the dealer, they told me that it just needed to be reset via Star so I don't know what they did, but they got it working. About a month later, it stopped working again and I was going to take it back to the original selling dealer who wasn't a Mercedes dealer, but I happened to be at the Mercedes dealer doing a PPI and afterwards it was working again. Been fine since but I don't press my luck and don't really use it except to demonstrate it to people.

Oh as for WIS, you can get a cheap knockoff on eBay for around $10+, just search for Mercedes WIS.

Again, Thanks for all the advise/help offered. The problem is not yet solved but I'm hoping when I get the new relay today it will all come together. I'm retired so I have nothing to do but fix my toys anyway. You mentioned something about STAR, It might be something with the computer because the voltage only appears in one direction (up) Somewhere the reversed polarity isn't there

I got the new relay and that did not fix the problem. I saw that I might have to "flash the memory" and I am assuming that has to be done by the dealer or someone who has a STAR
I'm still waiting on my WIS which I hope will shed some light. What do I need a sunscreen for anyway?

Believe it or not I had to change the rear SAM to get the sunscreen to operate. I should have just left it down and removed the fuse for the price of a SAM.

Mine works once in a while. I never really use it so it sticks. I need to give it a little tug when hitting the button. I never used it anyway, just pressed it once in a while to see if it still worked.
