722.6 leaking from top breather cap

Hi Ive had a leak on my 722.6 since I bought the car. I have replaced the female electrical connector and orings. It was still leaking and after further inspection the leak is now coming from the top breather cap thingy. Im not sure what this exactly is for but its the black cap that sits on top of the gearbox by the stator gasket and bell housing side. Would anyone know why the fluid would be leaking from here? Is it simply and o ring or something else?

Thanks for the reply, I recently did an oil change on this gearbox and drained as much of the oil as possible where around 6 litres came out. Would you know how much oil this gearbox is supposted to take? Im sure I have read its around 8 litres. I know the torque converter holds around two litres which I did not drain..

Also not sure if this was a good way to test for gearbox oil leaks but I used my compressor to blow a small amount of air down the filler tube (maybe 5psi) to try to find out where the oil was coming from as I thought the electrical plug was still leaking. It turns out that was good and it was only coming from the top breather cap..

So saying this. the gearbox still seems a little sluggish when kicking down and changing gears. If it has the correct amount of oil is there anything else that could be causing this?

722.9 trans-5.5 quarts
722.6 trans-uses special dipstick for measuring. I would say around 4.5-5.5 quarts. But the most accurate was is a dipstick. And measure with engine on and trans fluid at operating temperature.

Hmm ok im reading alot of mixed info. I have recently done a full rebuild of a 722.9 because of broken oil pump.. And the dealership says the 722.9 takes anywhere from 8.3 litres to just over 9..I have put around 8.5 in it and thats working perfectly. As for the 722.6 I will get a genuine dipstick and measure when the gearbox is upto temp (52 deg)..I recently bought an ebay cheapy and its almost impossible to see the oil level..Im going to drain the box and torque converter this week and refill from empty..Will post up the results..

If you are just doing a regular filter/gasket/fluid exchange on a .9 5.5 quarts is just fine. If you drain all components then yes it will require a little more, but i've only put 5.5 in the 800 trans services i've done and haven't had any issues. You can pick your dipstick up off any sight, ust type 722.6 mercedes dipstick....

That still may be too much... Im not exactly sure for .6 because thats what the dipstick is for. But anything over 5.5 in a .6 with just a "drain pan and fill " is a tad excessive to me but again i dont know specific capcity for that trans...

I would recommend you park the car until you can verify fluid level. You don't want to turn a simple $70-100 into a new transmission.
