2006 E350 Code P0016 only

Hi everyone, this is a great forum that I have been following for quite sometime. Usually can handle everything I need with a quick search. I have searched p0016 and all I can find are the P0016/P0017 threads.

My car is a 2006 E350 with 149k miles. Awesome car that runs perfect. The engine serial number is within the range for the balance shaft problems. I am currently getting the generic P0016 code off and on. I know it is a generic OBD code but unfortunately I have a generic reader.

I did the check by removing all 4 of the camshaft sensors and setting the balancer at 305 degrees and all of the circles are dead center. I have now also read that means nothing in diagnosing anything.

Could this be a sensor or is my car doomed?

BTW, I just checked the magnets and they are all the newer part number. Don't know how long ago they were changed.

Also, I got a P0015 code yesterday that reset itself in a couple of hours.

Thanks for any help in advance.

MB DTC 0060 = incorrect position of right exhaust camshaft (P0015). If current and/or stored, code is normally caused by a malfunctioning camshaft adjustment solenoid. Definitive diagnose MB DAS, without diagnose replace solenoid to see if it clears

I have the same exact issue on my 2006 E350 4matic, intermittent code P0016 only. I looked at all camshaft marks at 305 degrees and the right exhaust seems a bit off center (looks like 4 to 6 degrees to me) while the other 3 are centered. I changed 4 solenoids and I still observe the same intermittent check engine light with P0016 code and cam still a bit off like before. Can this be the wiring to the solenoid? If it was the balancing rod defect, shouldn't that affect both cams?

P0016 = right intake. Pull fault codes using MB DAS to check MB sub codes if available i.e.: 1205 through 1208.

Thank you, I thought P0016 was the right exhaust and P0017 the intake. I only get the P0016 code and also I do not always and consistently get the code set immediately or engine light on immediately after motor start, and check engine light can stay off for hours when it goes off, typically goes off when the car has rested for a couple of hours or more. Also, at 305 degrees on crankshaft the left intake cam pulse mark and exhaust pulse mark are dead center, the right intake cam pulse mark dead center, only the right exhaust is off a bit. I do not have access to MD DAS. Just my $20 Autel scanner

Konigstiger the thumbnail you attached specifically states the check engine light coming on immediately after motor start, producing one or two codes. My check engine does not come on immediately, and then goes off, for sometimes hours or days in either state. Is there anything else that can be causing this other than the balancing shaft defect? Any ideas appreciated

I posted thumbnail in an attempt to rule out your balance shaft concern. Generic P0016 when diagnosed with DAS should pull code 1205, etc. to better identify malfunction.

I assume the dealer is the only reliable source for DAS diagnosis? Would it be worthwhile to get my own STAR DAS? Today I started car, check engine was off, drove in city for 1 hour. Turned engine off, 10 minutes later light came on when I started.

So how did you resolve this issue? I'm having the same situation.

In my case I had to do the balance shaft gear repair. There is a test for that that involves removing the balance shaft position sensors, turning the crank to the 305 degree position manually and observing the markers for alignment. But first check your VIN to see if the car is even a candidate for this sort of problem, as there are other problems far easier to fix that can produce similar codes like bad cam position sensors or camshaft position adjusters (aka magnets).

06 R350 and E350 Mercedes
Hi. I have same issues as you have with E350 Code P0016 and R350 Code P0025. I have change all the sensors and magnets. And still have the engine light on. But I have discovered that the engine light comes on only when I drive both cars over potholes, or rough roads. I still don't know what actually cause it?
