parking brake problem

2005 e320 cdi 100,000 miles

I have rarely used the parking brake over the last 10 years, very flat here.

Went to release the brake and the pull handle came out of the dash. The handle is not broken. Now when i press down on the foot peddle it clicks but never engages. The brake does stop the wheel form moving but the foot pedal does not stay down. Adjusting the brake at the wheel does not seem to help as i can tighten the brake so the rotor does not turn and loosen it again but he foot pedal remains the same.

Please point me in the right direction.

1. is it the foot pedal? if so how do you get the kick panel cladding off?
2. many other model forums show that the part of the braking mechanism can be accessed under the back seat. this does not seem to be the case with my car. Am I right.

I will point out that it still clicks as that seems to be the tangent that may parking brake post go down.

thank you

2003 E320
This happened on my 2003 E320 yesterday. Has anyone had to deal with this issue and knows what to look for?
