I am running 235/40 R18 in the front, 255/35 R18 in the rear. Same on my wife's BMW.

Look above on "pinebarons" signature, same on his car, but as he is running 19" inch wheels, he has to go even smaller on his sidewall height:
245/35 R19 front
275/30 R19 rear

As far as I am concerned, your set up is all good and what it is suppose to be.
Just as a note, the sidewall isn't actually smaller either (at least not significantly). The sidewall number is a % of the width of the tire, so a 235/40 = 95mm and 255/35 = 89.25mm. And depending on actual fitment, the tire may sit more or less taller on the rim (bulge vs stretch).

245/35 = 85.75mm, 275/30 = 82.5mm.

The objective is to have the sidewalls be the same height.

yes, I see now. Smaller side wall in the back. Though I did a search and for 18" rims I should be 245-40-18 front and 275-35-18 rear vs the 265-35-18's I have now.

The first number is the width of the tire in mm so that's why the back tire is wider. The second is the aspect ratio so the height of a 35 is 35% of the width of the tire. I think you have the correct size though, 265 was a standard size for the rear. Sometimes people like to go with wider tires thinking that it looks better, but all tires are a compromise so it's worse in the rain and snow.

I spent a lot of time reading on tire rack.com and will definitely replace with Contis DW very soon if it's still available.
I love the DWS06 sport sidewall and is perfect for my aggressive summer driving through the mountains, the A/S 3 sidewalls were a little soft for me. DWS06 wet performance is great too though being a rear wheel and lowered car, I don't or rather cannot drive in snow.

The Michelin A/S 3's are gone now, it's A/S 3 Plus now and they're supposed to be even better in the snow.

I never thought I'd say this but as much as I love Michelin, I have them on my SUVs but no more on my car, besides I've no interest in driving this car in snow; A/S 3+ are still reportedly squishy on turns.
