2008 E 350
Exclamation Need assistance BAD!

I have a 2008 E 350. I've been told by a local automotive shop in Rock Hill SC that I need to purchase 2 new Exhaust Cam gears because they weren't locked in position when removed. He indicated that they're spring loaded and when he puts the old ones back on my car won't stay in timing. Is this true. These gears are very costly.

No I was told that I had a balance shaft issue which was untrue. My balance shaft is in perfect condition. But upon removing the timing cover to inspect it. We removed the CSM gears. I was told they are spring loaded and should ha e been locked before removing. I've since been told that they still can be locked. The mechanic originally told me that I had to replace both.

Yes, for future reference the backlash compensation can be reset with considerable effort. Although it's always better to lock it before removing, it will not be damaged if allowed to spring out.

Thanks for your reply. It really helped. May I ask you what was the issue of it wasn't your balance shaft. I was told the same thing before removing the timing case to see that my balance shaft was in excellent condition.

Nothing related to this, what are your symptoms / diagnostic codes?
