08 E350 bad fuel pump?

Over the weekend, I was out of town and received the "check oil levels at next refueling" message on my cluster.

The last two times, that I topped off some oil it leaked all over the engine and caused the car to smoke. Although,I was very careful topping off the oil and made sure the oil cap was on tight. The oil still some how managed to get all over the engine. I had a MB mechanic check it out,and was told there no leak and it was just a loose cap. Hence,I didn't want to top off the oil while out of town and risk having a smoking car on a long ride home.

I drove maybe 200 miles tops since the message, and today while my car was idling the car shut off,and won't turn on.

I know that on some vehicles the fuel pump will shut off if the oil pressure get too low,so I am thinking this might be the case.

The car cranks but won't start similar to what is shown in this youtube video.

Is there a way to reset the fuel pump relay or does the fuel pump need to be replaced?

My car is a 08 e350 with about 120K miles on it.

Start with checking codes.
There is long way from low oil level to lack of pressure.
I think we are talking +- 4 liters, so it would take big leak and lot of smoke to splash 4 liters of motor oil.

I called one of those mobile mechanics and I was told they wouldn't be able to pull codes since the "check engine light" isn't on. Also,he mentioned that there is no code for fuel pumps.

After searching some threads and viewing my data card. I found out my car is one these California pzev models and I can't replace the fuel pump alone since it's part of a sealed fuel tank. Any advice on how to make sure what the problem is before I have the vehicle towed to the dealer.

Pzev suppose to have long warranty.
Call your friendly Service Adviser and ask.
And don't go back to those mechanics you have seen last time.

Dealer will charge to diagnose vehicle however, if problem is related to any part included in emissions warranty (15 years/150,000 miles for CA.) charge is waived and repair is free.

I ended up getting the car towed to an indy Mercedes shop after the shop closed. The next morning the shop calls me and tells me they have bad news and good news. The bad news was it was in fact the fuel pump that was bad and the whole fuel tank ensemble had to replaced.

The good news, was that it was covered by the Pzev warranty. The shop owner calls the MB dealer in the area and coordinates with the service manager to get my car serviced. The whole cost is being picked up by MB. They even gave me a loaner car. I'm really impressed by the indy shops service and MB covering the cost.

When,I initially contacted MB-USA they told me that my car was included in any "extended warranty" eventhough I provided my VIN #. Thanks,to this site and other mb forums. I saved a ton of money!
