08 E63 front end clunk after hard acceleration

Posted this in the Amg forum as well, thinking I may get a faster response here....I searched around a bit on the forum but didn't find much specific to my model with the same issue. Recently purchased a 2008 E63 with 94k on it...car is super clean, unfortunately on the test drive the noise did not come about. When I let off the gas after heavy acceleration there is a solid thud/clunk sound...just once. From what I found on the forums here it seems to be the motor mounts. Just looking for a little input as I need to drive the car from Portland to NorCal where it will live....There is no sound under normal acceleration, only when the pedal is to the floor pretty much and then let off. I'm on a time table and am not able to have it looked at before the trip...any and all input is greatly appreciated.

While you are checking, make sure to inspect the transmission mount as well.

Def a motor mount failed. Replace both and the trans mount, at 90k if they aren't broken they have collapsed anyway.

And once you replace all 3, (I just did on mine), you will think you are driving a brand new car.

Mine were gone at 83K miles.

Yup. You won't realize how bad they are until you put new ones in. Even if they haven't failed completely, they will be almost a 1/2" shorter than new ones. It's kinda amazing they still build them this way, with such a short service life. Many sets are compromised by 50k miles. We regularly change them under factory warranty on the 4 cyl cars, they get so bad at idle.

So am I correct to assume that you made the trip from Portland to NorCal with no issues and took the car to the shop as soon as you got home?

Did you go to MB dealership or indipendent repair shop?

Would also love to see a pic of your new ride.

If you had some other suspension bushings replaced as well, you will not believe how awesome the car will ride.

Let us know what you think when you get the car back.

Good Luck!

The trip went smooth, although it was difficult not to really get on it on some of those great mountain roads! I took it to CK Auto Exclusive in Santa Rosa after reading the great reviews and recommendations he got on this forum as well as yelp, google, etc. It should be ready tomorrow, really looking forward to seeing how it rides...he got the stance adjusted correctly which should also improve the handling a little more as well. Ordering the tune from eurochrged now, should be a fun week! I'll take some pics tomorrow and post them up, but it's 08' white with pano and p30 package....trying to decide if I want to have the two piece AMG 18" refinished in gloss black or go with a nice set of concave 19"s. Really liking the Forgestar F14s in piano black super deep concave....

Great, glad all went well and your car will be in fine shape tomorrow.

Looking forward to the pics.

In regards to the wheels, to each their own. I personally prefer 18's, as I would not go up to 19's for various reasons. They sure look better, but I do not believe they are practical for everyday use.

I'm still on the fence with the wheels, waiting to see what kind of quote I get back on refinishing the 18s as I do really like them...

Sorry for the delay...so, completely different car now! Drives like new, also had a fuel system code that i thought was an MAF code but turned out to be a few things...long story short the computer was limiting the power of the engine as well due to a few problems from the code. So very happy with the car, the repairs were not cheap, but it drives like new now...very happy and impressed! Now it's time to do some tuning....still on the fence as wether to go with just a eurochrged tune, or do the stage 3 kit...well see how the next paycheck goes...haha!

Glad you got it fixed. Did the previous owner ever do the head bolts? I'd do those first before going with a tune. Airmatic and brakes aren't cheap on that car either.
