Aux Jack Input

I have an E320 with nav and I'm trying to use my iPOD through the aux jack input in the glovebox. I tried plugging my iPOD into the aux jack in the glovebox and then pressing the audio button and then selecting the aux input, but it doesnt work, no music is played from the iPOD.

What could I possibly be doing wrong? Is there additional equipment needed in order to use the aux jack?

I read through the command manual but it was absolutely worthless.

Thank you,

William Cole

I have the same setup...a 2004 E320 but without NAV and it works as you describe. Check your Ipod and the minijack cable you are using.

I thought you had to have the Nav system to get the Aux input. I have a 2004 (3/04 build) E320 and don't see an Aux jack in the glovebox.

Oops, I do have the Aux imput. I was just looking in the wrong place in the glovebox.

Now I've got an excuse to buy an iPod.

Well I've got a birthday coming up

BTW, I found it because I finally got the light in the glovebox to come on by turning on the key and opening the glovebox in the dark. The jack showed up right away when I did that.

Do iPOD owners get their music from iTUNES?

You must have iTunes on your PC to load your iPod but you don't have to buy any music from iTunes if you don't want to. Start by burning all of your Cd's in to iTunes. The instructions for doing this are detailed on the Apple web site. All you then have to do is hook up your iPod to your PC and let it synchronize with iTunes. All of your iTunes will then be copied to your iPod. Recommend you burn your Cd's in the MP 3 format to iTunes so you can then use the files in other software such as home video background music.

Is the music on the iPOD in MP3 format? Will it work with the Premium sound system in an E320?

I was thinking of downloading iTUNEs music to my PC and burning it to CD's since there are five different CD players in the house plus the ones in the cars. I may get an iPOD but I'm more interested in the music.

What? It's covered pretty well on page 67 of my COMAND manual.

Go back and read my next post. BTW, you do NOT get a COMAND manual if you do not get the Nav package. Fortunately, a friend of mine gave me one.

At least I didn't get one with my 3/04 build E320.

Anyway, I was looking for the jack and so far as I know it's not shown in any manual.

One last thing. I just turned on my daylight running lights. The snowbirds are back in Arizona and any little bit helps...believe me!

You first have to get your CD music into iTunes before you put anything on to your iPod. You have a choice as to format when you rip the CD and inport to iTunes or when you buy the music direct from the Apple iTunes store. MP3 music is not as compressed as some of the other formats and is pretty much the defacto standard but you must select it as your iTunes desired format or the Apple software will import your music in another format (AAC or Apple lossless encoder). To make CD's from the music you have on your iTunes, you should select the "audio CD" format as only the newest CD players will play MP3 CD's. Some DVD players will also play MP3 as well as Audio CD's.

The MP3 songs on your iPod will play through you Aux port or you can also send through a small FM transmitter that sits on top or your iPod direct to your radio tuned to an unused FM station. I find this method as good as using the Aux port. All of my iPod music will play through the Aux port or the FM method. Most of it is in MP3 format but some is AAC (more compressed than MP3). I would think if you have an Aux port in your E-320, your ipod should work with your car.

You can get all of your answers to how iTunes and iPods work on the Apple website.

I didn't get the nav package... but I got a COMAND manual (and mine does cover the aux input). Now you see the futility of it all?

I called MBUSA about not getting the manual and they said I would have to buy one or that I should ask the dealer for one. The only description of my sound system is in the first 50+ pages of the COMAND manual.

Anyway, my problem was that I was looking in the wrong place in the glovebox for the jack. So far as I know, there isn't a picture of it anywhere in the MB documentation.

W Cole... I had the same problem with mine, '03, E320, Nav... Plugged Ipod into jack and hit aux but nothing... After a few attempts by dealer and confirming with MBUSA, dealer finally agreed it should work and found a bad connection to the aux jack in the glovebox... My advice, take it back to the dealer and tell them to keep it until they fix it... It's worth it, it sounds great through the system! I will fax you my receipt if it helps...

What type of cable are you guys using to connect the IPod into the car? I tried Radio Shack, but they said they had no info on it. Thanks.

You know the 1/8 inch headphone plug that's on the end of the cable you use to attach the earbuds that came with your iPod to the iPod itself? The cable you want has one of those plugs on each end.

Thanks everyone. I went on the Belkin Website, and found this:
Mini-Stereo Audio Cable, 6 ft.

Part # F8V203-06GLD-AP

Would this work?

* Connects portable audio devices using 1/8" Stereo mini-plug.
* 1/8" Stereo cable
* Male-to-Male
* White
* Lifetime warranty
* 6 ft

That's what you want, except for the color. Don't you think it will clash with your interior? Just keep the glove compartment door closed, and no one will ever know.

Jim

Anything Mini to Mini shoudl be fine.

Radioshack has them too. I would avoid the "Belkin" tax.
