normal for e350 to roll back on hill?

my dad just got a '11 e350 2 days ago
and he got a bit of a surprise on his drive home
the car started rolling back on a hill when he took his foot off the brake
so i am looking into this issue for him

of course a car is going to roll back on a steep hill when you let go of the brake...
but i feel like it's a little extreme
i've driven up this same hill in a many other cars for years
and no other car rolls back so easily back down this hill

the service guy at MB tells me this is normal
i even went to the dealership and drove another e350 and stopped on a slope... and yes, the car did start rolling back

i know the newer BMW and some other cars have the brake assist that holds the brake for a bit after you take your foot off to prevent the car from rolling back right away
and yes the e350 is significantly heavier than the other cars i'm used to driving
but you'd think mercedes benz would be capable of equipping their car with a similar mechanism to prevent this

just wanted to get some feedback from other e350 owners
is this normal? just something to get used to?

here's a picture of the designo magno platinum matte paint
love the color

The E has a hold feature if your dad chooses to engage it. I am not sure how steep this hill is, but, most cars will roll backwards on a steep incline. The E will hold the brake for a second or two to give your foot enough time to leave the brake and depress the accelerator. Doesn't sound like there is any problem with your dad's car.

Use of the "hold" function would probably solve that problem. It's a pretty neat feature that I've never encountered until I took delivery of my Bluetec.

Hill-start assist System

W212 in NA comes standard with "Hill-Start assist system".
On uphill/downhill grades, the system maintains the pressure in the brake system for approximately 1 second after you have released the brake pedal. Therefore, your car start off smoothly without the cehicle moving immedialtely after releasing the brake pedal.

Make sure that the transmission is not in neutral, or the parking brake is not engaged.

So... for at least 1 second, my car remains stand still even in very steep hill before starting to move.

Just like the bimmer...

Page 188 of the owner's manual..."hold" function.Hill assist may or may not be a solution but "hold" definitely is.

I agree with you. Hold function will definately put the car to stop, just like you are pressing the brake. But XKxRome0ox question concerns is when his dad removed the foot from the brake, the car started to roll back instantly. This is not normal. The hill assist will hold the car in incline position for about 1 second automatically.

If you are on hold, the car will not roll until pressing the gas pedal for example.

i drove the car myself yesterday to check out the problems
the car started rolling back IMMEDIATELY
and that's why i thought it was a bit extreme case

(also had a driver window not going up automatically... had it reprogrammed at dealership. easy fix)

so... that pdf file about hill-start ... that's only good for if you are coming out of PARK right?
that is a pain in the *** when we live in the foothills and drive up a hill with a street light all the time

i don't have the owner's manual handy.. but i will look up the HOLD function
is there an online pdf of the w212 owner's manual?

my parents have always had black sedans ... and they were looking for a black on almond
but once they saw the matte silver, they could not look at any other car
i think it's a great color and it's not all that common on the road

i've taken a few pictures but it's very difficult to capture the color
some pictures just make it look like a metallic silver or even a dark silver... others give it a slight blue tint

i love the LED DRL's ... i'm so jealous

Obviously you are not grasping the "gravity" of the situation.

I just hope the OP's dad keeps his foot on the brake should I ever be behind him on a hill. It is generally not normal to take your foot off the brake on a hill (up or down) and let the vehicle roll.

of course he keeps his foot on the brake while stopped on the hill
the "issue" was that as soon as he took his foot off the brake to move over to the accelerator, the car started rolling back
it freaked him out since this doesn't happen in the other cars he's driven
and same for myself
i drove the e350 to check it out for myself to see how bad it was
because i've driven up the same road in at least 6 other different cars in the past few years and never had a car roll back so badly

it doesn't even take a really steep incline for the e350 to roll back either
that's why i made this thread and even took the car into the dealership to seek answers

I would say there must be something wrong then. I would have the dealer check it out.
