So how do you find places not known to you? How would you find the Gamekeeper Restaurant in North Carolina for example? Hey?

Exactly. But that involves using the system.
BTW, the drive up to and down from The Gamekeeper is a hoot. We did the round trip in snow & freezing rain. Our new at the time GLK 350 4matic was superb. The active lighting was priceless.

The GPS in my 2013 E350 Coupe compared to a TomTom or Garmin unit is like comparing a Commodore Vic 20 to todays basic computer. Also, for $250 you can buy a unit with voice activation, and free map and traffic software updates for life. I'd be interested to know if I can replace the unit that came with the car with a TomTom or Garmin unit. I'm still trying to get over paying $150 for 1,000 mile oil and filter change.

Sir,
Perhaps you would need to get one of those Garmins to keep on your lap for navigation help then as it seems the system built in the car is not good enough. Funny how these ad-on features in the car become more important that the car itself.
I prefer using my built-in system as it is very easy safely to look at and use with the Comand control knob. If I have a place to go to and it is not in the navigation POIs the I press the Teleaid button and ask them to send me the address in my car's navigation system. It has always come in less than 10 seconds after I talk to the Tele Aid person.
And the build-n system also lets you call the POIs straight from the Navigation system.

Navigation version
How can I tell what Nav version is currently on my car? Can I read it on the Command screen somehow, or does it require dealer involvement?
MIght consider upgrade, but it would be helpful to know what version is currently installed. Thanks

1."The Data is provided for your personal, internal use only and may not be resold."
At the time YOU had possession YOU did not resell it nor did you use the data for anything but your personal internal use. The way in which it was originally purchased in a shared manner is not discussed nor disallowed so it was purchased lawfully. When you transferred it you did not enter in to a new agreement that included any new terms so it wasn't RE-sold.
2. "does not allow transfer or resale of the Data, EXCEPT on the condition that you may transfer the Data and all accompanying materials on a permanent basis if: (a) you retain no copies of the Data; (b) the recipient agrees to the terms of this End User License Agreement; and (c) you transfer the Data in the exact same form as you purchased it ..... "
At the time you transferred the CD it was in original unaltered condition I assume. You probably also gave them all the accompanying material also right? The retaining the data clause can be argued because of one point. You cannot make an agreement that is not possible to uphold. This agreement has already made exceptions to transfer the CD however IF they are referring to the bits installed as opposed to a copy of the CD itself then they have introduced an unsatisfiable condition and therefore nullified the contract. You cannot remove the GPS software before you transfer the disk. If they are referring to retaining a copy of the CD then just don't do that. There is no need to anyways.
But in the end you aren't going to win fighting MB (NAVTEQ?) nor is there a likely scenario where you would ever have to because they wouldn't be bothered nor even notice a few ppl sharing a copy. Post it on the internet and you may draw some attention but I doubt even then. They would just pursue the site to take it down if that. Its just not worth it to them I'm sure. If the judge felt that the terms were vague enough he could fall back on the "intent of the contract" which could then be further argued.....just playing devils advocate

Nav. update e-mail
Just to let everyone know, I received my notice to update the nav system on my 2010 E350 today from MB at a cost of $249.
I live in South Carolina and travel to Atlanta too visit our daughter in Roswell, Ga.(that's where I purchased the E350 in April of this year 24,360 actual miles).
I don't think I will spend the money to update, they aren't building any more roads in the sout as well as not repairing the existing ones,

I had it done once when I got a super deal and had the dealer do it while do some other stuff. No changes that I could notice after 3 years, except for the graphics. POI's seemed to be about the same, but I almost never use them anyway.
Got the email and I'll pass on it.
I'm still old school. Go on mapquest for directions before a trip to an unfamiliar destination. Make a copy for the car. Also keep a state map in car of state to which I am going. Still use the navigation though as it is a reminder of when to change lanes, make turns, etc.

hah, my wife gets more annoyed that I keep checking my phone for directions and traffic. Traffic on waze and google maps has been a life saver for me. I always pan ahead and calculate my own detours to avoid traffic on long trips.
Despite my best efforts, my wife refuses to help with navigation. So on some portions of longer trips, she drives so I can navigate. Don't think she cares much for that either.

It looks like those that got emails have 2010 or 2011 vehicles. Anyone with a 2012 or newer get an email or a map upgrade?
I sent email to my service advisor about it (have 2013) and never heard back.
My 2013 has navteq map version 11Q3 which I assume means 2011 Q3 maps.
I tried several web sites but noone seems to sell maps newer for vehicles newer than 2011.
Thanks

Anyone not using Waze on their smartphone really should download the app asap. There is no need to pay anything for navigation nowadays. I'm not sure when manufacturers will figure this out.

Some people don't like to burn up data on their phone. I use my phone from time to time if I'm already in an App and can click go. I tried Waze and hated it. That was over a year ago. Maybe I'll give it another try.

I am a waze addict, it's a free app, but I would pay for it.
I bought a phone holder that clips into the air vent, and leave the phone just to the side of the emergency flasher triangle button.
Do not use the built in nav in any of our cars, Waze is so much better.

which clip did you buy? I've looked into those but always though it might damage the vent slats.
My phone has a 6 inch screen so I just prop it up on the shelf below the nav screen. I can still see the song/track info on the left side.

I will. I just remember a bunch of pop ups, noises and other warning distractions as to red light camera locations or whatever. In the city here, that was really annoying. Maybe I just needed to spend more time turning that stuff off. Lol

Waze has a lot of setting so you can customize your experience. I mainly use it for long trips or very bad traffic. I like how the routing option let's you see alternative routes and the differences in ETA. Also, when you hit traffic, they give you a countdown until the end of the jam. It helps when you don't know how far the backup goes. But for daily use, I just open google maps and glance at the traffic colors to decide the best route to work, since I have more than one option.
