Compass Direction Does Not Show in Rearview Mirror
I have a 2012 E350W 4-Dr. I am assuming that the compass is standard - it works on the display screen but doesn't show in rearview mirror. Does anyone have an idea of what I could do to get it to display. Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Not sure about the 2012, but on the 2013 you can press the leftmost button on the bottom of the mirror to display the compass setting. Do you have that button?
The button is to the left of the three homelink buttons. The compass may have to be calibrated, but those instructions are in the manual as well.

I don't think the 2012s have this option. I read it in the manual when I first got my car that you can set your compass to light up on the rear view mirror, but I spent a few days trying to figure out how to turn it on. I gave up in the end. As for the button mention above, I have not tried that nor do I know if it even exist on the 2012s. Will try when I get to my car.

As an example of the confusion on this subject, on my 2011 E550, the left "compass" button does not exist as described and illustrated in the manual.
Instead, there is a small hole, through which you must insert a straightened paperclip to push. Doing that, everything works as described in the manual for pushing the non-existent "button."

I tried pushing the thing with a paperclip and nothing happened =\

That's because it doesn't exist. Don't push any "hole" with a paper clip, you'll just be pushing up the interior rubber strip that connects the Homelink buttons together inside the mirror. You can end up having the farthest left side Homelink button recede itself into the mirror.
Everybody: if you look at the current MBUSA website it will explain that 'compass in the mirror' does not exist for P1 cars (i.e., the optional COMAND with Nav.) The compass is on the COMAND Nav system screen. The description in the manual is a generic description for any E Class (Nav is actually still optional in any E Class.) If you have Nav then you won't have the compass in the mirror. Since just about all E Class cars purchased come with P1, they also don't have the compass in the mirror.
btw, the 'compass in the mirror' description is also in the C Class manuals, but only a C Class w/o Nav will have it in the mirror. Otherwise it's the same as the E Class: the compass is on the COMAND w/nav screen.......

Wow, I have driven 2010, 2011, 2013 cars and they all had it? My car has it. That seems quite strange that 2012 does not have it. what were they doing - rethinking the useless option in 2012?

Once again, cars with the nav option (P1/P2) do not have the compass in the mirror anymore. Instead it's on the screen. The description in the manual is a generic description for non-nav E Class models. It's on MBUSA's website.....

I'll agree it's redundant, but I use it when I need to see direction instead of screwing with the dash display to get to a compass display. The two displays stay almost in sync --- close enough for government work.

My 2012 E550 with P2 has the compass display in the mirror. It was like that when I bought it new and I didn't do anything to make it show up.

LOLL.... I wish somebody told me this before I tried because I did exactly what you said and the rubber thing never came back down.. I tried to get it back down but it wont come back. I don't use homelink as of now but I might have to later on.. Guess I have to go back to the dealer for this..

FWIW, my 2012 E Coupe (C207) displays the direction in both the mirror and the Nav. It was delivered to me that way.
If one needs to re-set the compass, it's accomplished using a stand-alone button to the extreme right of all the other buttons.

Ah if only that were the case. These instructions are identical to my owner's manual for my 2013 C63 AMG which started the current discussion.
That hole which shows on the overhead picture is supposed to be the point to turn it on but in fact does nothing. It is a small light to cast some illumination on the gear selector in the dark,
Pushing on it does nothing.

Exact same here (2012 E550 P2 with directions on the rear view mirror) and same non-results (tried pushing buttons with no apparent response). I gave up since the indicated direction is good enough if not accurate.
