Help: Rear-view Camera and Navigation

My rear-view camera does not come on unless the radio is on. Dealer told me that this is the way the system is designed. This seems odd since there are plenty of drivers who would not want any distraction while backing the car up. The same deal with the navigation: dealer said that radio has to be on for nav to function. is this really true for the 2014 E class?
Any input /advice is appreciated.

It should work as soon as you put your car in reverse and dint matter in what screen you on radio/navi/settings.

That's what I expected but it doesn't, and the Service Advisor said that he called MB and they said radio or something has to be on for the camera to work!

Well, if that what it takes!
Strange that in my Honda, rear view camera and Nav are independent of the radio status ; yet, the more expensive Benz can't be equally user-friendly.

Just mute the radio, there is a button on your wheel to do that super easy.

Camera uses the Comand screen so it is kind of natural that the power to the screen must be ON.

Pick a media source from the menu where you have no audio files connected, like AUX, for example. You can leave it on this setting and power ON without hearing anything from the speakers at all yet your camera and NAVI and everything else is fully functional.

Well, you were at the dealer ask him to show you another car and see if it does the same thing.

AFAIK there is no way to turn off only the radio. If you are pushing the button on the center stack in an attempt to turn off the radio, you are actually turning off the entire COMAND system.

Muting the radio is the functional equivalent of turning it off on this car.

Regards,
Don

The Command screen is the central nervous system; you can't even answer the phone with it off unless you want to get a ticket. Make sure you have no speaking passengers with you, so they don't distract you when backing up as well.

In addition the car remembers the on / off setting of the command as well. If I turn off the command and shut down the engine, on restarting next time and reversing, the camera wouldn't come on until I turn on the command.

Yeah its kind of annoying, but none of my MB's or Toyota's rearview camera works if the radio is off.

Did you read my previous post? If you select an audio source with no audio files it will be silent. And the car does remember this setting too.

In short, if you want to turn the radio off instead of turning off the whole Comand system from that button select a silent audio source instead.

They must have made a change in one of the software updates. In my E it is impossible to backup without the camera. In other words when you turn the command off, as soon as you put the car in reverse the command turns on.
I would be fine with that if it would turn the command back off when I am done reversing but it doesn't. I have to turn the system off again.
The only way to keep the command off is to never put the car in reverse.

Thanks for the info, but I don't want the radio to be silent anyway .

Remove the selection from the settings menu that activates the rear camera when Reverse Gear is engaged. Then your COMAND won't turn on.
