As I said,I am no expert by any means, cant really state that it sounds like a DI noise. But it does seems to come out from the belt tensioner and/or pulley. Anyway I will see the dealer takes a look at it. Usually I use a very good Indy, but I think it would be better to go direct to the MB dealer.

got car back today...cant find the noise...i cant hear it either...it is definately intermittend.
i guess if it was the recall noise of the scraping cylider it should be there all the time?
they solved slow cranking with new starter motor which i felt was the battery
this also was the same issue in a 2010 ml550 i had recently.

any thoughts on noise...pulley/timing tensioner?

In my car, my guess is that it could be the pulley/tensioner.

Tried to find some videos on youtube about M272 knocking to understand what it sounded like. Does this sound close?

That doesn't sound like a "knock" to me as in piston slap. That sound like DI or maybe a single valve.

konigstiger shared a copy of the bulletin that comes with an mp3 file to demonstrate the sound. Thankfully I don't hear that noise with my car, but now I know what to listen for. Posting here in case it helps anyone else diagnose...or sleep better.

Thanks konigstiger - you're the man!

Hopefully it will come back while you're still under warranty. Otherwise, I hope it's fine.

A bit confused on the Date Range Engine Number ranges.

Is this based on Production Date only or Engine Serial Range?

"This situation was corrected on engines as of production numbers listed below:
Engine 2729xx 31932895
Engine 2739xx 30441186"

Are those the only engine serials that are not affected?

"Affected vehicles are mostly production dates from 8/10 to 11/10 but might be outside this range situation was corrected as of engine # 2729xx 31932895 & 2739xx 30441186."

Assuming Production Dates are Aug 2010 - Nov 2010?

Engine Failure of a 50k mile E Class

Send it packing, especially now that the MB dealers are giving very good discounts on every model in the inventory as MB's aren't exactly selling like hotcakes. Good luck.

Thanks to konigstige I have the bulletin and my vehicle seems to be part of the bulletin... oddly the title lists "Vehicles with engine 272 with 3.5 liters displacement and
engine 273 with 4.6 liters displacement. Affected vehicles
are mostly in production dates from August 2010 to November
2010 but might be outside of this range."

Alas my vehicle is not 3.5L or 4.6L as it is 5.5L and even if it was the TT version it would be 4.7L.

BUT my engine code falls into the possibly affected range.

Has anyone here with a E550 gotten the bulletin applied to them yet? I see so far an E350 (MA-E320's Ride).

May be better to see what they are offering for your car and argue back to Mbusa that the resale is diminished so you need more than market value as u just paid off this car and did not intend to sell it. Now years from now when u sell you'll take another loss.

Mbusa will take care of u
