Quietness

I have a 2013 E3004M (Canadian model). I've been disappointed with the sound insulation, especially at highway speeds. The quietness of this car could be better.

Mercedes can nail this in the S-Class. Why not in the E?

The s class costs $40-50k more than the e class ... Is that a fair comparison?

Could some of your highway noise be related to your tires? I find the e class to be an acceptable noise level on the highway

When you test drove the 2013 model extensively before your purchase what was your impression of the highway noise?

I had E350 and now e250. I find both quite acceptable.

It could be the tires. I have Continental Procontact all seasons.

When I did the test drive, I didn't notice the noise, and I find it much better at lower speeds anyway. The wind noise is also fairly significant at highway speeds.

You make a fair point about the unfair comparison with the more expensive S-Class. Even if I could afford one, I wouldn't get an S. Too large. Ideally, the E Class size could offer refinement almost as good.

My Infiniti became incredibly loud as my tires wore down and once I got new ones it was whisper quiet again... Was night and day

Not much u can do about wind noise unfortunately. Have u driven an c class as a loaner to compare it's road and highway noise?

Is your tire pressure and alignment ok? Both may contribute to increased cabin noise levels at higher speeds. Your car is basically new ...

When I swapped out the Pirelli P-Nero-Zero's for Conti pro-Contacts on my 2010 E350 I was hugely surprized at the huge decrease in noise.

With my 2014 E350, it came with the Conti's stock and I'm very happy with the sound. Even at speed, with the pano roof open, I can still carry-on a conversation.

But your concerns are valid, search our forums as I recall seeing someone adding a good deal of sound deadening materials into a E class not so long ago.

There is an option to add a Acustic foil in the windows which is supposed to lower the noise by up 10db. As anyone tried this option? Have not gotten a qoute for it but in Germany it seems to be 350Eur (aprox 500usd).

W212 FL
I find the W212s quite quiet however tires could be main culprit , when I used to run on stock Continentals I could hear something like gurgling noise .I hear no odd noises since I switched to Michelin Primacy .
As for the wind noise, I hear it but that's not a W221 or W222 Still, wind noise is under tolerable parameters .As akarlsson said ,I had seen sound isolation option when I browsed W212 configuration for facelift models

You could always go to a high end stereo store and have them install dynamat in the door and trunk

I have the E class which is $20 to 30,000 less than the S Class. If you Paid $40,000 to $50,000 more for the S class you got ripped off. I believe it is the Tires that are on the e class that makes the humming noise that can be heard on certain roads on the highway. Only at high speeds. I know I had a hard time keeping the car under 85 mph for the first 1000 miles in order to follow the manual. There is a humming noise and it is liveable but WIG is correct Mercedes Benz should have taken care of the hum before the car was released to the consumer. Simple fix either different tires or more insulation in the rear wheel wells. I know I will put some sound deadening on the rear wheel wells before I go on vacation.

It also depends quite a bit on the road quality, and the material used on the roads. Here in Seattle, most of the interstates/state highways/local roads have pebbles in the concrete, and that completely ruins the ride quality of cars. Obviously, the concrete wears off faster than the stones in it.
My reference is California roads, which are amazing compared to Seattle roads. I have rattles in the car that were non existent before and it is incredibly noisier no matter what car you drive.

I took apart the trunk liner and found that there was a 3/4 in thick liner around the wheel wells. Has to be the tires. Has anyone tried the vogue tyres on a mercedes benz?

From the short test drives I've done in estates my guess is tire sound.
Rode a Cayenne the other day with air suspension. Tried in both comfort and sport mode and I'm certain that comfort mode has less tire sound than sport. Not much but I can tell the difference.

My E350 has Michellins, which IMO ride hard and noisy. However, I also believe the E350 has less effective sound insulation around the wheel wells than many other cars. I had a 2007 Hyundai Azera that was much quieter than my E.

If someone paid $48k (MSRP $56k) for a new E350, and another person paid $100k for a new S550 (MSRP $110k) -- that S550 owner got ripped off? Good to know.

That's about a $50k difference.

why would you compare a E350 to a S550? And why would you state the E350 would be less than the MSRP and the S550 would not be even tho the msrp is really about $107,000 and can be discounted to about $92,000. I guess to make your case stronger you have to exaggerate a little. I paid a little over $60,000 for my eclass. I could have had an s class with just about the same options for a little over $92,000 to me that is about a $30,000 difference. If I had gone with a e550 that difference would have been way less than the $30,000 difference but then I am comparing apples with apples. You need to go to a different dealer if the one you are dealing with wants $50,000 more for an S class.

You couldn't be more incorrect. The difference of the two is night and day.

Actually, the Current E class can be bought for 10k off msrp generally, and the New S550 can be at most 3-4 % of msrp. So it is closer to 50k due to market supply and demand right now. If you could buy a 107k msrp S550 new for 92k today, you could profit about 10k+ to any of the ppl on the W222 board cause they all paid msrp to 4% off range. Only one poster reported 7k off and supposedly may have had shipping damage.
