Turtle Wax Ice (Spray on Wax)

A body shop suggested I use Turtle Wax Ice spray on wax after each wash. Has anyone used this product? What were your thoughts? Pros / Cons?

Thanks.

Body shops traditionally know little about detailing (and this proves it).

Turtle Wax Ice is a low end consumer product that adds gloss but virtually no protection. It is fine for the person who wants to spend little time cleaning the car. It is probably OK over a properly polished and protected finish (but then you really don't need it.

It is kind of like rinsing your mouth with mouth wash when you really need to brush your teeth - it might keep your breath smelling OK for a while but then your teeth all fall out.

I honestly would not recommend turtle wax, have not had good experience with them personally, however YMMV.I would say go with meguiars ultimate spray wax, I use the spray wax once a month and my car looks amazing every time! Plus the water beading is amazing! In the end though it's all about what you prefer, try some different ones and see which ones you like!

Its not horrible for glossifying in hot conditions, I used it a fair amount when I lived in Arizona, but no longer being in that inferno I don't use it at all.

I would look for alternatives... depending on what you're hoping to achieve there are plenty of higher quality products.

I get excellent results with TW Ice. I don't use the spray, but the liquid. Have never found anything easier to apply and remove. Lasts a long time, too, as evidenced by water beading.

Regards,
Don

The dealership waxed my car when I bought it in Feb 2012.

The water still beads up when it rains, so I haven't seen the need to wax it again.

Commence flaming...

That, my friend, is the God's Honest Truth.

I have never washed a car by hand, nor waxed one.

I do own a bottle of the shiny tire stuff, but can't remember the last time I used it.

That is what car washes are for.

I used to be the same, unfortunately the consequence of owning a black car is if you get the tiniest scratch it shows like nothing. I had to learn that the hard way. :/

now I take no chances and wash and wax the car myself.

I use Meguiars ultimate spray wax a few times between normal waxings (I have a white car, so I can get away with more). It adds noticeable slickness/beading and some shine. Easy to use product, and it smells good.

Having been in your car Mike, I can attest that it looks great and the outside was shiny.

My black E needs lots of attention. Since I'm probably one of the few folks that actually enjoys cleaning his cars (also shining my shoes), it isn't a chore for me. I find it somewhat cathartic.

I like Mother's paste wax. It takes longer to dry and is more labor intensive to buff, but it lasts longer and looks shinier to my eye. One application in the late summer carries it through the harsh New England winter and a touch up to the hood, roof, and trunk lids in the spring keeps it looking great all summer.

I suspect that there is some sort of sealant on the car that was added when the car was purchased new and that's why it beads (although that may not be a good thing).

Also, your car is a lighter color so you won't see the swirls like you would on a dark car.

Check your windows for a sticker from a sealant company (CilaJet, OptiCoat, Permaplate etc.) or check your owner's manual packet for some sort of extra paper referencing a sealant.

Yes he will! He'll get hooked on detailing his car and he'll spend lot's of money on detailing stuff. He'll spend so much time detailing his car that he'll lose his job, his SO will leave and his house will get foreclosed. We'll next see him pushing a shopping cart that is so shiny that it will blind you.

The moral of the story (and of this thread) is that there are several levels of detailing and everybody has their favorite product. You can get decent results using an inexpensive product like TW Ice if you have a lighter colored car but you'll have to apply it a lot more often. You can get a much better shine using more sophisticated products and you won't have to apply them as often - but you'll want to.

Good topic. Like many, as much as I'd like to invest both time and money on high quality detail, I don't have either of those. I have been considering spray on wax as well on my black W212 since it seems to be an easy and quick thing to do.

Those who have used this type of product, how long does it take you from start to finish? If you are not very careful, does it leave any ghost marks or streaks if you don't buff it off enough (like the real wax)?

I get automatic car washes very frequently, so my car stays fairly clean all the time. So I'm thinking of just going through a regular car wash and applying. Is that a good idea or does the car need to be hand washed thoroughly? Does the car have to be completely dry before applying this stuff?

Based on someone's feedback here, I'm going to try Meguires ultimate spray wax

I'm a big fan of Palladium Silver (past two MB's) that doesn't show the streaks, dirt or dust ... and I don't need a part-time job keeping a black car black.

Precisely why my Obsidian Black Pearl Subaru left, and the Palladium Silver MB joined my family. It wasnt a part time job keeping that car clean, it was a full time job. Soft Paint + Black = nightmare.

Zaino is great stuff, but you pay for it. Menzerna, Einszett, Adams are all good stuff.

I love using optimum car wax - great spray wax. Griots Spray wax is also good.

Is spray wax easy to apply? Easier than paste or liquid?

Peter it is way easy to apply plus no ugly residue to worry about. Just spray, wipe and shine...I can easily do a car in 10-15 minutes.

Thanks man, will pick this up and try it out... Sick of the multiple hour process of paste wax or liquid wax ... Only to have it last only a couple months

Great tip.

I saw this product at the store yesterday and didn't buy it because I wanted to run it by the forum. I'll pick some up and take pics.

BTW - I bought their wheel and tire cleaner (safe for all types) and it is great! Wet the wheel and tire, spray on, wait 3-5 minutes and rinse. I touched up some areas with a wheel brush and was done.
