M278 E550 4-Matic Owners, Sound Off!
Hey everyone!
Coming from the W211 forum, just wondering who here is a current/past E550 bi-turbo owner, and how many of you have modded your car performance wise. Thinking the E550 bi-turbo is a logical next step from my 07 E550, and wanted to know overall impressions/reliability on the W212 with the M278.
Thanks.

Mine needed O2 sensors at 32k but other than that, it has been a tank. I have owned from 6k to 40k so far. Only problem is that I am constantly debating with myself about getting a tune.

I have this weird sticky brake thing, but dealer couldn't find, it only happens when the disk is hot, normally after 30 min. local driving. And the disk wrap issue, you need to change the disk more often than any other MB I have owned. And a lot of other minor issues like the computer sensors' problems.

Disks don't warp homie, except in very unique applications such as towing extreme loads or racing. "Warped" brake rotors are a misconception, meaning that most situations people refer to as warped rotors are actually uneven transfer of braking material to the surface of the rotor from the pad. A solution is to go through another bedding procedure or have the rotors resurfaced to take off this uneven material transfer.
A more permanent solution? Get new pads/braking compound. Go for Akebono or StopTech or something of the sort.

I understand, but mine had problem at 5k miles and it was on normal new car driving, I usually don't push too hard on my new car on the fist few k-miles. Dealer did changed a new set of pad, and at 7k I can feel it again. If it doesn't last 5k of normal driving, I think it is the car's problem.

So as per the second part of my question, are there any W212s (non-E63s) on this board that are making pretty big power? I assume at least a handful of people are tuned, and even fewer have downpipe/other mods but I'm sure they exist.

Just popped on a CPO '12 E550 ... it goes like stink and I absolutely love it! The motor usually loafs along at 1.5K rpm's in 6th or 7th gear, which is just a few hundred rpm's shy of its max tq rating so power is still available even w/o downshifting.
From the seat of my pants, I think it's 85% the straighline perf of a '09-14 CTS-V that has 556hp and about that much torque. The Caddy can dance with its trick MR susp, but I'm afraid my non-air susp E550 can't.
