Front windshield cracked: 3rd time in less than 2 years!
Hi Benzers,
I'm globally satisfied of our E class but after 2 years I have to say that is pretty weird( aka not acceptable) to have had 3 frontshield cracked in the same spot (the lower base of the glass, under the wiper)!!! It doesn't matter the size of the stone,it always happened while driving on the highway and I can accept that this is going to happen due to bad luck, but let me say that is incredible how weak these windshields are...has ever happened something similar to your E models?
My Benz is a E wagon 2013 restyling,I love it and the insurance is covering all the costs but I'm getting sick of it...it never happened on our other cars.
PS: here in Italy is not very common but I'm considering buying a Clear Plex cover for the glass,in order to reduce the damages in case of stone-impact...is it helpful?
THanks for any feedback !

That's odd that the crack is always in the same place, seems that it could be a stress crack rather than a stone? I would suggest talking with the dealer.

Something doesn't sound right if this is your 3rd. I would take it somewhere else to get the next one. Glass installation is something of an art - many dealers in the states get a specialist in to install windshields.
Off topic - I had an 1986 425 biturbo 15-20 years ago that I loved. What a car.

I want to look deeper into this "thing",infact I'm going to talk with the dealer but 2out3 occasions I'm sure I hit a stone while driving, not 100% sure about last episode...I read that some ML w166 have had a similar issue too.

So basically I'm trying to figure out whether is a glass issue or an installation one...probably is only a matter of bad luck so this is why I'm thinking about getting some plex-protector,it's not good to change so many shields.
Offtopic: hehe in a short time new italian sportscars are going to reach the US shores...Alfa Romeo and Maserati's rebirth!

I believe window seating is not right. If it is the case, you put in another one it will crack again at same spot. I like to believe that it came from factory like that.

When the next one is out look for yourself at the area where the crack occurs. I have to believe there is a small high point there from the body assembly shop that got missed when it was checked before it went into paint.
When the adhesive cures it will pull in and put a point load on anything out of plane to the surrounding area and a sharp wrap will cause it to fail at that point just as if you were cutting glass.
