New Tires
#26
I'm due for new tires on my 2010 E350 Sport. I'm replacing the noisy Pirelli P Zero's. I think I'm going with the Continental ExtremeContact DWS. What do you guys think of this tire? Also, has anyone tried the Continental PureContact with EcoPlus Technology tire?
Is it ok to use one of the local shops such as Mavis Tire or Pep Boys?

The Continental DWS tires on my BMW were ok, a bit noisy and not very good in the snow but they were 19"s.
I like the Michelin MXM4's on my E350 much better, they are 17"s

I live in pothole-fested Los Angeles and I usually buy my tires from Tire Rack as they come with "free" road hazard for 2 years.
My vote goes to Pilot Sport A/S 3.
If you like a longer term road hazard then go with Costco.

What I meant was general buying habits...
Most Euro countries ban summer tires during winter months so most people will have a set of summer tire and a set of winter snow tire.
That's why people who does European Delivery on BMW/MBZ/Porsche need to rent a set of winters if they pick up during winter season.

I think I'm going to buy the Conty PureContact A/S with Eco something or other. They're marketed as less sporty than their higher perf Conty DWS, but deliver a higher tread rating and are less expensive - plus they rate higher on (every?) nearly every measurable tirerack category (though tirerack argues you can't compare tires from one category to another).
Truth be told, my E is limited to 130-131mph and I spent most of my time behind the wheel being a good citizen. That's how I'm rationalizing passing on the DWS.
Your mileage my vary.

Here's what I think of the Conty PureContact A/S after <500mi:
They're awfully quiet in comparison to my worn set of OEM P-Zero all-seasons. Color me impressed.
I've had them in some heavy rain and they performed as expected. It seems they're good to go in the wet. A snow review will have to wait until next year.
Despite recording higher dry handling scores on tirerack.com than the A/S Conty DWS and A/S P-Zeros, I don't believe the Conty PureContacts are any better. I'd say my new set of Contys are on par with my worn A/S P-Zeros.

I got screwed. Well, one of my tires got screwed - it picked up a screw right in the side wall a few weeks ago. As a man (trying) of my word, I popped on a non-staggered all-season set of Conty PureContacts with Eco Technology for my 4Matic based on my logic above.

Update
Agree with their ride and quiet performance. I have 48k miles on my Conti PureContact tires. Unfortunately, the last New England winter did a number on them and I'm going to replace them this week. I could probably stretch another 10k out of them, but that would mean dealing with the slight vibration that they are exhibiting from hitting dozens and dozens of potholes. Price from Sullivan Tire is $988 out the door for a set of 4, TPMS, alignment, tax, and disposal. Pretty good deal IMHO.

After about 38,000 miles, I replaced the 17" Continentals on my wife's 2010 E350 Luxury sedan with the Michelin MXM4 tires and the difference was night and day. The car now has about 49,000 miles on it and the ride is still quiet, smooth and wonderful. I am a huge fan of the MXM4's and would not mount anything else on this car.

I had the new tires installed over the weekend. It is not the slightest exaggeration when I tell you they make the world of difference. Super quiet, comfortable, and the car glides down the road. The new tires provide the experience that I was looking for in buying the Luxury model. I had no idea how worn my old set had become until the new tires were on the car. Going forward, I'm going to take special notice to ride and noise degradation. Because the degradation happens so gradually, it takes special attention to pick up on it.

Buying Tires at the Dealer
Is there any advantage to buying tires at the dealer? They are offering buy 3 get one free. Did anyone take advantage of this and did it work out better or equal to non-MB shops?

There is a decent chance that this is a good deal. That said, if it's close and maybe the dealer is a few bucks more, throw the dealer a bone and give them the buy. It never hurts to be in good with your dealer. Every now and tben, you need help and tbe only one who can help you is your dealer. My dealer has sprung for some expensive, out of warranty repairs. When was the last time your tire store did that? We should all try and build goodwill with our dealers.

dealer is not convenient for me for tire rotations every 6 months. Most tire shops include life of tire balancing and some sort of road hazard coverage at a reasonable cost. I have comparison shopped dealers for tires and they are always more $$ - even with the buy 3, get 1 deal in January, the dealer was still $100 more than the special from a local place and without the road hazard and balancing benefits.

The dealer offers free road hazard coverage and some offer specials that include free rotation as well.

part of the problem for me is having to frequently go to a dealer for rotations, where they get their hands on you car, and you can't see or watch them.......as if we trust them in the slightest......well, most people don't I think...
at most 'tire places', discount tire for example, I can watch, look around my car: clean calipers and wheel wells, even clean the inside's of the wheel, not to mention learning a thing or two about wheels and tires, meeting the dudes that do the work and forming trust and ease about the guys working on it......try to get that kind of transparency at a dealer! it just won't happen; I've tried again and again......
there are just too many other places to go besides the dealers to get tires and wheel work done, sorry for the micro rant

I can't say I agree totally. My dealership has a sitting room with a huge window that overlooks the shop so I can see what is being done. I don't trust most mechanics.

that's interesting that you have a big bay window to see through, the dealers I have used do not have that
