I just purchased a 2012 E550 and also have a 2014 E350. Is there a way to upgrade the back up camera on the 2012 so that it has the 2014 features i.e. lane guides when you turn etc.?

Static lines are generally integrated into the camera, so if you were to find an aftermarket camera with them that would physically fit and were able to wire it in, they should display. The dynamic lines that many new cars have (those that bend depending on direction backing) are generated by the video processor that takes input from the cars computer.

If that is the case I should be able to purchase a 2014 camera and hopefully that would work?

Don't know. Depends on whether the mount is the same as well as the wiring/connector. You could try and do a little disassembly on the cars to see what the differences are. I would think the camera wiring wouldn't go too far back and would have to connect somewhere in the trunk.

I just acquired a 2013 E350 sedan, and the owner's manual indicates that the backup camera view should show grid lines. After my local dealership updated the firmware they came back stating that the manual wasn't reflective of all command units installed and my unit wouldn't display grid lines.
