E550 2013
Should I buy this 2013 E550 4Matic?

Hello everyone. I am new to this forum and am happy to participate in future debates on MB cars.

Presently, I have the opportunity to purchase at end-of-lease a mint condition E550 4Matic with premium packages 1 and 2, for the residual price of 39, 837$ CAD. It has 51,000 km and maintenance is up to date. No accidents (was leased by our company and was driven by my dad before he passed away in may 2015)... so this is sort of an emotional decision for me because dad loved this Merc.

Would you make the purchase?
How about warranty (extra 3200$) and inspection (300$) ? Would buy any? Would you get it CPO (extra 3500$) ?

Full cost breakdown if I get it CPO;
CPO
39,850.00 $
Transfer fees 575.00 $
CPO w taxes 4,111.25 $
Extended warranty 2yrs or 160k km 2,702.50 $
Total 47,238.75 $

Cash only purchase without any extended warranties or inspections is 39,837$ CAD plus 575$ transfer fees = 40,412$ CAD

... I have until next Monday to decide!

Thanks so much!

Sorry to hear about your lost. From that stand point you do whatever makes you feel best and most at ease. However, just glossing over the numbers quickly, I think you can get that year and model for a better price. Or for around that same figure CPO get a newer model with maybe similar mileage. Many of the forums members are extremely knowledgeable about financing options on MBs, so I'm sure someone will respond to your question with a more definitive answer than mines. Good luck

While the V6, RWD E350's historically have fairly good reliability, the V8, AWD 550's do not. How much is left on the original warranty? I would make sure to have at least another 3 years of warranty coverage.
Not sure how CA$ convert to US$, but it does sound kind of pricey to me.

I'm guessing it was at most a 3 year lease which leaves you with at least year of factory warranty left. CPO would add another 2 years, but honestly if the price is right I'd just buy the car and get an Mercedes extended warranty which would cost less and provide the same benefits (and could be purchased at a later date as long as the car is under factory warranty.

I'm not familiar with the Canadian used car market, but on several new models I've seen the Canadian version be better equipped and sell for less Canadian dollars than the US does in USD (price a C63 507 coupe on both websites). This makes me think that the used prices should be less, but I don't know for sure.

It's in Canadian currency and...

The price is in Canadian dollars and it is a Canadian-market car so it was definitely more expensive to buy than the equivalent in the USA.

Orignal lease price was 90,000$ CAD plus taxes (102,000$ CAD). My dad added a down payment of 12,000$ cash.

Residual for buyback is 39,837$ CAD plus 575$ CAD transfer fees.

The lease was for 3 years (started in November 2012 on a 213 model) and ended on November 21st.

Orignal warranty is 4 yrs 80,000 km. Odometer is at 51,800 km .

What are the reliability issues with the v8 E550?

Warranty is still good for another year.

OK horrible is a pretty strong word... Which makes me wonder : what kind of money should I be spending? What price margin should be acceptable?

I've looked at the inventory for CPO and 2013 E550 are all more expensive with more mileage than mine. I'm guessing if the lessor doesn't buyback the car they sell it at a higher price than residual...

Let mee see other model years and get back to you.

No problem, keep us in the loop and we'll try and help best we can. I did the CAD conversion and it appears to be about 35k for everything you said in your OP. The more I think about it, it's not the worst deal by USA standards but you can get a better price here. Also looking at Kilometers and converting to miles thats roughly 31,000 miles which is pretty much a new car.

If my google conversions are right lol. You could definitely do worse but again I look for a newer model if at all possible.

Yes, buy it. A 2013 550 for just under US$30K is a great deal. You have a little warranty left, and you know the history is good. Just keep up the regular service, you don't need to waste thousands on extending warranty. I challenge anyone to find a similar 2013 for that price. It's an amazing vehicle.

It is $36,000, not UNDER $30,000. Plus don't you have to pay sales tax on top of the transfer fee? It is still far from a bargain, but the large down payment has reduced the residual so that it is worth considering. The biggest plus would be your familiarity with its service history and outstanding problems. You do not see many people buying their leased car at lease end as the economics are always bad.

I'm calculating on the sale price of CA$39,837. But it seems that they are offering CPO at $39,850, so I'm not sure what's the difference. Taxes and fees are inevitable on top of any sale price.

About the taxes : if I buy it under my wife's name, no need to pay taxe (15% here in Quebec, Canada!) because of her native american status...

Prices I've found in the CPO inventory (http://certified.mercedes-benz.ca/used) :

Similar to my 2013 E550 w/51k KM :
* prices vary from a 2013 E550 49,000$ w/ 48k KM to a 52,000$ 2013 E550 w/ 48k km....

The cheapest newer model than mine is a 2014 E550 w/ 22k km is 61,000$
The cheapest same-year model than mine is a 2013 E550 w/ 48k KM is 48,780$

No available inventory for NON-CPO...

Yes, you're right, that's the USD price for the full CPO at 47k $ CAD

The USD price for non-CPO purchase (just residual w no ext. warrranty or inspection) is 30k$ USD

Only 2012-2013 years would be directly comparable. Earlier has different engine, later has different body. If no taxes, that's even better. I think I might be half native in Canada. LoL.

One thing that is interesting about these types of threads is that most posters are from the US and don't understand that there is a lot more to the Canadian market than just the conversion rate.

There are two things that make this car more valuable - the emotional attachment to the car and the fact that the OP knows the history of the car.

Those things, combined with a reasonable price on a CPO car makes this a buy to consider.
