If the "steering box" means the steering gear you need to take the car to the dealer shop (or other shop) for a fix ASAP. There is not supposed to be any play in it and there is no adjustment for it either. Something is bad wrong!

2014 E550-sold 😩
I concur. Not a DIY, but get it checked out right away. Your written English is better than my spoken Swedish, so it's all good.

Is this steering play new or has it been there all along. If you mean that you can move the steering wheel 10mm right/left without it moving the wheels AND it isn't a new issue then it may be normal.

While it is correct that there should be no play in the steering wheel, 10mm is a very minor amount.

Is there a similar car (same year/engine) that you use as a comparison? The 10mm may be normal for that combination.

steering play has been there since I bought the car,(2000km) the car has gone very far 230,000 miles (37,000km)
yes i mean that i can move the steering wheel 10mm Right / Left without it moving the wheels
i will go to Mercedes and leth them look at the car, it seams like this is a issue That Mercedes have on the W212 steering Because on ebay germany They sell a lot of refurbished steering racks?, so it seems like ppl need them for some reason?

Im thinking if this should be possible DIY, im thinking that it should be possible to reassambly the shaft with the pinion gear than turn it (half turn) and than assambly it again, then i should have a better "tooth"on the pinion gear that grabbs inside the steering rack, and the play is moved to when it doesent hurt, 1/2 turn of the steering wheel

if i turn the steering wheel 1/4 turn then it is no play in the steering rack, the play is only when the steering is forward
i dont think the problem is the steering rack inside, it should be the pinion gear that has wear on it?
it is difficult to explane in english i hope it is possible to understand what i mean?

If you've gone 35000km with that little play in the wheel then I wouldn't worry about it until your next service and raise the issue then. This is not a DIY fix.

I suspect that the car was designed with a bit of play dead center. I think the first few responders to this thread misread the 10mm to be 10cm.

I did not misread. 10 mm is way too much as mine has zero. I would not tolerate 10 mm play in steering.

Or it can be the pinion gear shaft bearings that have worn out. It is not likely the gears themselves are.
