ECU Replacement core charge?

Recently replaced my ECU at a Mercedes dealership. I asked for the old one and was told there would be a charge of $70. Is this standard? What would MB need the old one for? Thought all replacement parts were new OEM?

As far as I know, if you are paying for the service then you have the right to the old parts.

Was the new ECU a refurbished unit and priced as if you were turning in an old one to be refurbished?

Total bill ended up to be $1,400 with parts labor and tax. ECU was a brand new one I was told. Is the "bad one" that was replaced "useable" or worth anything. Can it be re-programmed. If so I want it ... I guess it's something I can ask Eurocharged that ia tuning the new one on Tuesday.

MB is part of the auto alliance requesting ECUs, etc., be covered under the DMCA, so they most likely don't want you to have the old ECU, as their position is that you don't own that ECU (more accurately stated as the code that's on the ECU), as MB would have you be a licensed user of the ECU.

Thanks! Hmmm good to know that. By the way, my ECU is now enroute to be tuned. The question I had if you knew. I am hardwiring a dash cam and hardwiring to the fuse box. I will need to be testing the circuit to see if it turns on with ignition and not on constantly. Would it be harmful to turn on the ignition only on position 2 (before crank) even without the ECU connected? Logic says no harm but I could be missing something. Any info would be helpful.

Find the wiring diagram. Tap into the wire for the cigarette lighter/12v plug. I was able to easily find it in the passenger side footwell of my car. That is a car on not constant on source and reliable to use of the dash cam purpose. I utilized it in my Radar Detector hardwire.
