New 2010 E350 / Seat Heater Switch

Brand new to the forum here. Good info. We finally got my wife's dream car, an E-series. Used, but in good shape (PPI checked out). It's the dark blue metallic (which is purple in certain light). She loves it!

To my question... Last night the drivers seat heater, when turned on, would switch back off in three seconds. I did this no matter the setting (1, 2, or 3). I've read posts regarding the dreaded seat heater issues (over-heating, heater elements not working), but don't know if my specific issue is related.

Any clues?

Thanks!

Al

Yep , thats exactly what it is , same thing with mine , common issue , turn it on and after a few seconds it turns off itself.
Even tho sometimes it DOES stay on like it supposed to.

And yea , its the heater elements inside the seat , heating pad needs to be replaced , around a $100 for the bottom pad , but i di didnt get my hands on it yet because , it requires taking out the seat , and leather seat cover... i had a thread about it on here. Maybe during the summer ill attempt to fix it. But right now just feeling upset that it dont work and dont warm up my butt in these cold temperatures

Ok. That's a bummer for us as well. Lots of rain right now in Ca., so it'll have to wait for the summer time for me to fix it. We're thinking of having the seats re-done anyway (leather has a small rip in the passenger seat, so we're considering re-doing both seats to match (perhaps a darker color even, not sure yet).

This may be one of those "while you're in there" projects. I could replace the heat elements, then take it to the shop to have them recovered.

Any info. on what parts to get?

Thanks!

Al

Are you sure the rip in your "leather" isn't actually the TSB issue with the rip in MB-Tex? That could be covered under warranty, even if your car is out of warranty (I think). If you take your car in and supply the heater element for them to install, they might not even charge you to install it, since the TSB work would be free to you anyway. Just an idea.

What does "TSB" stand for. Technical Service Bulletin?

The "rip" is a failure of the seam on the passenger seat, right in the middle of the seat bottom cushion.

Yep that sounds like the bulletin for the MB-Tex seats.

Yours looks like this? http://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mbwo...dc4c4f0cae.jpg

If your VIN is before A27110 you can reference LI91.10-P-063393 to request MBUSA goodwill seat cover replacement. In as much as bulletin lists cause as “being investigated” and bulletins are only covered under warranty, a specific VIN range is documented indicating defective cover may have been installed. Wow, that's EXACTLY what it is. When I pointed it out to the dealership and asked them to fix it before we bought the car they absolutely refused.

Not so sure I even want to approach it though. It's about a $150 to replace it at a shop; not sure it's worth my time.

The seat cover is going to be about $240, the heater is another $110 plus the $150 to install it so it's more like $500. If you've got a warranty that will cover it, it's probably worth it.

Do you happen to know the part number of the seat heater for just the bottom cushion? My sides and front portion of the seat bottom heat up, but the center part doesn't, or if it does, it's super weak. I know the part number of the heating element that goes around the outer edge to heat the bolsters and front; I don't really need that though. However, I'm having hard time finding the part number of the heating element just for the center of the cushion. Thanks in advance!

I believe that might be the seat back heater. I think the seat heater might be 2128202498, but you should always give them your VIN before ordering to make sure.

Try this site for $120 with free shipping:

https://www.oediscountparts.com/part...&siteid=215242

Or this site at $112.10 but they charge shipping, might be cheaper if you have several items.

I wouldn't bother with a used one for $75 even if it were the right part, not worth the labor if it fails later.

Thanks so much for all the quick and helpful info! Certainly eases my mind with regard to cost. The only concern I have is the fact that the part number referenced appears, according to the parts diagram, to be the U-shaped portion of the seat heater that goes around the sides. I guess I'd need the center portion on the flat part of the seat cushion.

Regardless, any ideas of what a dealer might charge to install a new seat heater if I brought it in?

I have same symptoms with seat heater. Both front seats. Fuse not blown and sounds like either suck it up until the “Off Season” like say February/March time frame. Warm enough to work outside but before it gets too hot. I will try passengers side first that way if by chance I screw up something then i know to take the drivers seat to professional.

Time to visit UYT.....(University of YouTube) for some pointers. Might consider re- covering the front seats since I will have the covers torn off anyway.

Thanks for the pointers and guidance everyone, figured it was heated elements but wanted confirmation.
