Europe: Off the beaten path...

I'm curious to learn about places you've visited in Europe that you've really enjoyed, but might be considered "Off the beaten path." On a visit to Rome in 2005 we were on our next to last night there with one more day left before moving on. At dusk, we were standing at the beautiful Trevi Fountain, when a Roman standing next to me struck up a conversation. I told him about our remaining day and that we weren't quite sure what to do or see. He suggested Hadrian's Villa, a short drive out of Rome. We went and had a spectacular half day there. I don't think the place is on anyone's bucket list, but I was pleasantly surprised and can highly recommend a visit there, time permitting, when in or near Rome.

Lake Königsee

Place in which dreams may come true. A place that allows you to put the cycle of thoughts and events on pause ...
Here, time stops and you start to hear yourself in Echo, the expanding over the surface of a cold mountain lake ...

Practical information:

Lake Königsee - the lake is located in Bavaria (Germany), but it is 40-50 minutes drive from Salzburg, Austria. From Salzburg to go to Berchtesgaden (train or bus from the center of each hour):

Then there are two options:

1. The transfer to the railway station in Berchtesgaden'e the bus to Schönau am Königsee

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schönau_am_Königsee
http://www.koenigssee.com/

Go to the church 1 hour by boat.
Schedule here: http://www.seenschifffahrt.de/en/koenig ssee /

2. Or go to the "Eagle's Nest" - is the summer residence of Hitler. Located on the top of a mountain with a beautiful view.

Beautiful pictures! I am planning a European delivery this May or September 2016, and I had the same question. I wish to visit beautiful and tranquil places for about 13 days. Any other suggestions are welcome! Thanks!

We are planning for September 1st pick up my wife GLC.
I spend hours on Bimmerfest ED forum with my research. Tons of useful information.
I also use Microsoft MapPoint 2013 application. Microsoft discontinued this app back in 2013, but I have my copy and use for route planning. See my attachment how this app looks.

Top 10 European Roads

At Ultimate Drives we don’t just organize driving holidays, we make sure that the roads you get to drive on are some of the greatest, anywhere in the world. The map above illustrates some of our favorite roads across Europe, featuring our Top 10 Greatest Driving Roads for 2014 (orange pins), as well as some other amazing roads that didn't quite make the list this year - but still well worth the visit!

For the Top 10 roads, scroll down to view the list, then select your preferred road. For other recommended roads, just click on the pin for more details. Once you get to the detail of the road itself, as well as a review of the road, you will also find some recommendations on places to stay / dine in the surrounding area.

IMPORTANT: During the winter months where passes are closed, sometimes Google Maps can divert around the pass. We try to add a mid point to avoid this, but occasionally even this doesn't work. Therefore, please just keep this in mind when looking at the detailed maps.

Don't forget that Sept.1 will probably fall within Bavaria's 2-week summer break. May have a little more road and site seeing traffic.

The Flying Bulls: Harmony technology, art and ... heavenly cuisine

Hangar-7, Salzburg airport, Austria.

Right at Salzburg Airport in an incredibly beautiful design of glass and metal is a dangerous mix of aircraft, a Formula 1 car, a nice lounge, modern art galleries and restaurants heavenly cuisine ...
Salzburg - a RedBull, in this city is the main office of the company, which is producing only one product firmly in the lead in the industry. But this report is not about energy drink, and about sports RedBull subculture with its epicenter in Salzburg, Austria. RedBull sponsors almost all sports in this town, there is a football team of the same name, sports arenas and stadiums RedBull. The company sponsors a variety of extreme sports destinations. For many years there in Formula 1, the last 2 years his own team, which won the 2010m in the overall lead in the championship.
But the main thing - all the planes! The company's slogan "Gives you wings" - "inspires", which is why the epicenter of this sport are RedBull space planes.

www.hangar-7.com
Hangar-7 is right in front of Salzburg airport passenger terminal. This enchanting two glass structures, one of which - the exposition, the second - this is a working pavilion.
All aircraft "on the fly", periodically pass airshow, they participate in sports and recreational activities.
We were there on an overcast rainy winter day, early twilight, but a bright light is not needed ... It's a great feeling when you are inside the hangar airplanes and helicopters with a Formula 1 car's different plays nice lounge, gradually replaced by soft colorful light background ... incredibly positive and calm.

Everything is built on contrast: the power of art and the atmosphere of tranquility, plus the installation of contemporary art in the interior ...

www.flyingbulls.at

Man with wings:

This is the second area in front of the hangar, just landed a small plane business aviation, possibly with Dietrich Mateschitz on board

And contemporary art:

As well as several restaurants and bars, haute cuisine, one of the bars, "360" is located directly under the dome:

There are concerts and art performances:

A unique place! It is recommended to visit!

I've done parts of Route Napoleon near Grasse. The route was fun and quite beautiful. I've always wanted to do Stelvio, but never have been there at the right time of year.

How cool! Hello again! I'm really concerned about how long MB is going to take to confirm my requested date. My SA told me that MB takes much longer about it than BMW does. I have a feeling they may push it out by a month. I'm OK with that, but later not so much. I want to be able to book my flights at least two months in advance for the best pricing, and I want sufficient time to book hotels and such as well. Best wishes with your upcoming ED and new MB!

We do like to worry, don't we? I think I would be OK with a loaner as well.

"Eagle's Nest" - the summer residence of Hitler at the height of 1834m in the Bavaria

The breathtaking Alpine panorama from Salzburg, Austria to the German Konigssee, unique serpentine, elevator in the rock, overcoming 124 meters in 41 seconds - all this is the summer residence of Hitler's Kehlsteinhaus or "Eagle Gezdo", given to him in honor of 50ti anniversary and built in record time time. This is a place I would definitely recommend the program to include a visit to Bavaria or Salzburg.

"Eagle's Nest" a place called the Americans who captured the territory after the end of hostilities, since the construction of the complex had a more intimate name - Tea House.

Kehlsteinhaus The project was one of the most expensive and difficult to realize, planning and construction of which Martin Bormann commissioned the architect Roderihu feke. Construction of the tea house and the road to it was completed in the summer of 1938, after a 13-month construction period.

The construction of the Eagle's Nest and entrances to it lasted 13 months. Plank serpentine length of 6.5 kilometers passes through five tunnels, a height difference of 700 m. The road ends at the site, which is currently stopped tour buses.
On site is a tunnel length of 124 m, which ends at the elevator, decorated with bronze, polished to a shine. The capacity of the elevator two dozen people. Lift 41 seconds it rises to a height 124 m, where the Kehlsteinhaus.

The construction process:

House, on behalf of the National Socialist Workers Party, was presented to Adolf Hitler's 50th birthday - April 20, 1939.

In the course of a massive air raid of the British Aviation April 25, 1945 on the area of Obersalzberg Kehlsteinhaus (one of the few buildings) are not affected. After the end of World War II Obersalzberg was occupied by American troops. The Kehlsteinhaus, which the Americans have nicknamed "Eagle's Nest" because of its location on top of a mountain, settled the military headquarters. Eagle's Nest was confiscated by Americans April 1, 1946. In 1951, he was transferred to the Bavarian government, which has decided to demolish it. However, the county Berhstegaden temporarily blocked the decision. Thus, the Eagle's Nest, it was decided not to destroy.

So "Tea House" became the "Eagle's Nest":

Now the "Eagle's Nest" - is a very beautiful observation platform and restaurant of the historical moment - there is only a stand with photographs in one of the hallways.

Now here is bottled the famous Munich Hofbroy and a small souvenir shop:

Practical information:

Eagle's Nest is available to the public from May to October, but the specific dates vary, so be sure to check the official resource. My friends and I have somehow been here 3 years ago on May Day celebrations and could not get to the top.

http://www.kehlsteinhaus.com

By the eagle's nest can be reached in two steps: by car to the tourist center and the parking lot or from the railway station Berchtesgaden bus is here. Pay attention to the yellow signs temporary "Kehlstein", so as GPS is on another road, which is now under repair:

From the parking lot to the entrance of the tunnel with an elevator ride special buses, which are sent at the same time 4 pieces at intervals of 30 minutes. Fare 15.50 per person, time of departure - fixed. We were on a weekend in May, from the date of purchase of the ticket before departure had to wait for 2 hours. So leave extra time.

Imagine a cozy little town in the crystal-clear lakes, green grass on lawns and blue sky ... And the lake towering snow-capped mountains ... narrow streets, colorful houses, unhurried pedestrians, sleepy morning coffee ... yes, probably just such a town was color in your last dream!
