Extended Warranties; Worth it?

Hey guys!

Curious about what everyone thinks about extended warranties for used vehicles. I found a company that will give me complete coverage on my Mercedes for $140/month (with an initial down payment of $750.)

I'm not too sure if I should do it or not. This car can become quite expensive to repair, it's the only reason I am considering it in the first place.

It's for my 01 C320 with 103,000 miles. The final price is about $2,800 and the deductible is $100. Monthly payments are about $140. It doesn't sound bad on paper, but I have 0 experience with this stuff.

I bought one with my 07 E63 (in 2012). It was the Lexus Extra care platinum. When I did my research before buying the car, pretty much everything I read said that it is a good idea. In the end, for me, it was a break even deal. I received repair work that equaled what I paid for it, all at the MB dealer.

However, the peace of mind made the car a lot more enjoyable to drive. Just knowing there is a cap if something hits the fan was worth the couple grand. With that said, I would not purchase one on a 01 C-class. The repairs on that car is just not as expensive as the AMG models.

If not MB CPO, do not bother. The dealer or indy will most likely not want to deal with it, so you will have to settle up. There are very few, if any, 3rd party warranties worth getting involved with, especially on a 2001 C-class.

3rd-party warranty companies come and go like the evening sky, and there is a reason for that.

There are specialty Independent MB mechanics throughout the area (in NJ). You won't need $140 per month for repairs unless you have a special lemon, and even if you did, good luck getting the company to send you a check.

I have an 06 E55 that I purchased an extended warranty on for an additional year after the factory warranty ran out. I have only had one major thing and a couple of minor things replaced under warranty, but they were all factory warranty repairs and didn't go beyond the original warranty. I was considering purchasing a warranty after my extended warranty ran out but I decided against it. I just couldn't see paying extra per month for something that I was likely not going to use. For $2,430 that you will spend (140/mo * 12 + 750 = $2,430... not sure where the extra $400 is), you may never even use it... So you pay that money for nothing... And if you are even remotely handy, a lot of the repairs can be done yourself (and this board has some excellent DIY articles)... Or at a local independent show, which will be much less that the dealer anyway... Besides routing oil changes and other routine maintenance, all I have had to repair on my car in the last two years was thrust control arms, my gas cap attenuator, and my passenger-side mirror housing and glass (this was my fault though). The money I was going to spend on the warranty would have greatly exceeded my actual repair costs... And for what it's worth, I drive the crap out of my E55... It's an 06 with over 120k on it...
