Looking for opinions on G Class

Hey guys. I'm not a G Class owner but I'm looking to pick one up. I've owned Mercedes pretty much my whole life and even as a kid my dad owned diesel W123's and 126's. I currently have two E class's a 210 and AMG 211 and an old 123. I'm in the market to pick up a G Class but in Diesel which seem to be very rare in the US. I wouldn't mind importing one if the price was right.

My main question is how hard is to get the parts to convert everything over to US specs ? I would be looking at getting a 2000 or 2001. From what I've seen in pictures and videos from people the 2000 and 2001's have a alot of things that look simular to the same year 210's. For instance the instrument cluster. That brings me to my second question, are there parts off other series that are interchangable like the instrument cluster ? I figure that and the headlights would definately have to changed over to be legal in the US and probably arent found on other series. But with the abundance of 210's I could probably pick up the parts at a you pull that are interchangeable from other series if they are.

If anyone has accomplished converting a G Class over to the US specs I would glady appreciate it if they could give me some insight. Also, anyone else that has anything to add I appreciate it and thank you too.

Doug

Many people have considered importing a diesel G-Class to the US, and most have found that it's difficult and expensive. Why not just buy a used G500?

I'm a diesel guy. I wouldnt mind an older G with a OM617 but I like the interior of the 2000's and 2004's.

I respect that, but Mercedes USA doesn't. It is prohibitively expensive to do what you want. You have to make do with what's already available in the US...and besides, once you drive a G500/550, you'll find it's not a bad compromise.

Aren't most of the G class diesels in the US are 460's? I've yet to see a 463 diesel here plus dont you need a RI to do the importing?

I would have to go thru an RI but I could save some money buy getting the parts and doing the work myself.

This isn't the best forum for your project. I suggest heading over to Pointed Three to get some expert advice:

You can NOT do it yourself. The RI needs to do all the Federalization on imports less than 25 yrs old.
