Owners chime in please! Need input.

Greetings,

I’ve been a long time lurker of the forums. Usually lurking in the GLK forum, however I’m a lot more active on E60 M5, E46 M3, Land Rover and Audi forums. I was toying with the idea of buying a high mileage G500 W463. I was hoping you guys can give me some input regarding reliability and maintenance insight (Or what I should expect rather).

Currently I am watching a single owner 2002 G500 with give or take 178XXX miles or 285XXX kms. I understand that the 2002 have a fair bit of electronic issues (What specifically?) however the owner is willing to sell at $17000 CND.

The body has 3 tiny spots of bubbling rust (The least rust out of the hand full of 2003 W463 with a third of its mileage). Currently the vehicle has a promotional wrap on, thus assume his words are true, the paint is in good condition. The owner has full service history and record of the car. Regulators replaced almost every year until the dealer swapped the new version of regulators on. Last year he had his whole drivetrain overhauled, bushings, brakes, bearings, fluid flushes and a few other small things. The interior is “like new” as he was mostly the only passenger in the vehicle. Needs oxygen sensors, it has gas cap loose warning on (He tried solving it, didn’t work, what could it be?) and normal 12 year wear and tear.

My goal for this car is to drive it until the engine is gone and turn it into a project car, will go for a diesel swap (OM606 with hybrid turbo and myna IP?).

Do you guys think this is a good buy, what should I watch out for? Did I do my due diligence? Are my info correct? Any 2002 owner can chime in for reliability and high mileage ownership? Any insight help and experience is greatly appreciated.

Thanks
