G55 URGENT ADVICE NEEDED!

Hey guys,

I am in the process of buying a 2010 G55 with 20k miles, recently test drove it, here a couple of serious issues I noticed, car was incorrectly bulletproofed, so the dealer had to replace ALL 4 DOORS, and the sunroof has a horrible sounds when closing, probably the sunroof motor is dying because of all that extra weight.

Doors: After say 60mph, I start getting some INSANE WIND NOISE, like if we had an open window, I think that is too low of a speed to be getting wind noise, what do you guys think?

Any and all suggestions as to what could be the problem would be greatly appreciated, I am a G55 newbie and don't really know if I am being to picky.

If the sunroof design is similar to that in our G550, the cause of the noise could be the cables. And this is not a minor repair. Took two visits and untold hours of labor. The horrible noise if gone, but now the deflector won't retract properly when the roof is closed. So, yet another trip to the dealer.

Our noise sounded like tension being built up and released. Really awful sound. Think: tearing off the roof with a huge set of vice grips.

Wind noise? Well, yeah. There TONS on it. The rig is shaped like a shipping container. By any chance did it have an aftermarket roof rack on it? Because they will make it even worse.

The problem is when closing the sunroof it sounds like nails on a blackboard like the motor is struggling to close it.

And wind noise at 50-60 miles an hour?, is that normal?, I would think these cars are built like a vault

If the roof is making a stuttering noise, and it feels like it's struggling, then I would say that could be the problem we had. You don't want to fix that on your dime. Trust me.

Yes, definitely built like a vault... on that can be bounced over rough terrain, not necessarily carry passengers in silent luxury down the road.

The windshield. It's flat and nearly vertical. That isn't a very slippery shape to the wind. Nothing on the rig is slippery.

G wagens are not going to provide any of the comfort you will find in your M class or Pepper. I had a couple of M classes. They're glorified minivans as compared to a G wagen. You can't expect a body-on-chassis truck designed in the late 1970's to ride like a jacked-up unibody car.

Find another G wagen you can ride in and compare the wind noise.

Oh absolutely, I'm not expecting Rolls-Royce level of silence here, but at least not wind noise like I'm running with one window open.

With that said I will go to a local dealer and try a 2000 G55 and compare to the two of them.

Had that sunroof issue fixed 3x under warranty. Weird cables or something. The whole roof liner had to come down from what i understand. Wasn't simple.

This car sounds a bit of an issue. Tread lightly.

Good luck.

Roof issue fixed.

Still getting a very annoying whistle sound after 80mph, anybody experience an issue like this?

noise

It's been awhile since I've been on the forum but your truck sounds like mine. No pun intended. I recently broke a windshield. When they took off the windshield seal there was a rust issue. Now when I get to higher speeds the noise and vibration sound is even louder than before. I looked at the seal in the upper side portions and there is a little space where rubber overlaps. If there is space for water to get in for sure air can get in. Which in turn has the potential for noise. I will be filling up the small space with some kind of silicon and see if that helps.

FYI, I had a major rust issue on my 2010. Dealer covered it as a "courtesy." MB seems to have a purposely vague policy on rust and corrosion.

I got caught in a wind storm around Jan and had to stop for gas unfortunately right in the middle of it. Went to open my door and the wind blew it right out of my hand and flung the door open with a bunch of force. This shifted the hinges enough to cause a small gap in the seal of the door frame, which resulted in a ton of wind noise. Your hinges might be worn out from the extra heft, or could just need readjustment.
