I haven't heard of a new G model. Do you mean the G65 AMG?

.
Mercedes renewed their contract with the builder of the existing G last year to run thru 2020.

There are other versions of the existing G coming... like the new G500 4x4 squared coming at approx $250K

No there is complete redo of the G coming in the next few years. I've heard 2017 or 2018. It's going to be lighter. wider with more cabin room, and likely an independent suspension front and rear. I want it!!!!

This is from the Bloomberg article

"Also being considered are improving the vehicle’s stability and interior space by widening the body as much as 10 centimeters and lowering the roof slightly, according to a person familiar with the plans, who asked not to be identified because decisions are not final."

I thought that they had finalized making it a bit wider and lower but keeping the overall look the same. Some increased room in the cabin would be welcomed

.
yes, the G500 4x4 squared is in fact wider. but that's a product of wider axles, and add on fender flares. not the over all design of the G

Ive seen the article youre talking about, but its just some random unidentified persons hearsay at this point. What the others are talking about with the contract extensions is more factual, and to me more trustworthy at this point. It would make much sense to go through the trouble of extending the contract through 2022, if you they were just going to come out and make an expensive GLE.

And I also wonder why they would have bothered with the new engine in the 2016 if they were going to essentially completely redo the vehicle in 2017. I suppose they could be planning to use the same engine and figured they might as well get some miles on the design, but it still makes one wonder. It'll certainly be interesting to see where they go with it. I took delivery of a 2016 just before the start of the year and love it - I traded in my 2014 G550 for it. It's not radically different, of course, but the new engine is nice. I'm still debating whether the adjustable suspension is worth it or not. The Sport mode is REALLY nice on good roads and especially on highways (it tracks much better in Sport mode), but the Comfort mode seems a bit squishy or something. A mode that is the same as the non-adjustable suspension would have been nice.

2017 according to Autoweek/Car and Driver

This was from 2014 though....

http://blog.caranddriver.com/mercede...than-35-years/

After 35 years of doing as little as possible, Mercedes is planning to give the enduring Geländewagen its first major overhaul in 2017.

According to Autoweek, Mercedes wants to widen the G-wagen by up to four inches, shave 400 pounds from the curb weight using more aluminum and high-strength steel, and install all-new powertrains and electronic systems. Since its 1979 debut, Mercedes hasn’t changed the truck’s basic structure or dimensions, and only last year did it finally redesign the interior to sweep away parts that seemed left over from the 1980s.

A lighter overall G means that Benz can throw in a gasoline six-cylinder engine without turning down performance to the level of a WWII halftrack. AW reports a new 3.0-liter inline-six in development for the next E-class in 2016 will produce more than 360 hp and pair with the company’s upcoming nine-speed automatic. (U.S. buyers have only seen gas V-8s since the G was first offered here for 2002.) That, along with electric power steering to replace the ancient recirculating-ball setup, will help the G-wagen improve its dastardly drinking problem. A new front suspension may turn handling from treacherous to cautionary.

During a brief chat in Geneva, Mercedes CEO Dieter Zetsche told us the G’s iconic, squared-off design language wouldn’t change. The interior, however, will be all-new, and you can expect the cabin to adopt the look of the 2015 C-class and also to be fitted with wider seats. A new electronic architecture that can accommodate the latest Benz safety aids will also show up.

This article appears to be more than just random hearsay but it is a two year old article and I haven't heard any other news since then. Anybody have any other sources on whether this will actually occur.

Nice find! I had an order for try first G63 but passed it up for a CL63. I hope they pull this off. Slightly wider, and lower, and maybe an independent front suspension would be perfect.

CRAZY COLOR G63
Not for a while. MB is currently testing an updated military version of the G, but that won't be around for many years. Don't expect an updated G wagen until 2021 at the earliest.

USA is getting G500 4x4 later this year, if anyone is serious about one let know so I can line you up with the factory with the other serious buyers I have.
